Rift S or Quest 2?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

My last headset just died, it was a HP Windows Mixed Reality, and I am looking for a new one.

I have a medium config: Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 2060, 32 Gb RAM

I understood the HP Reverb G2 is the best ATM but it is quite expensive and I am afraid the Quest 2 will be too demanding and I'll have stutters while flying.

So, is the Rift S a good option? Will it be better than what I had before? I found one for 200 euros which has been used only one hour so it is new...

Thank you!

The rift s is nice for what it is but I'm afraid you won't be too happy with the performance with a 2060 without dialing the settings down a lot. I run a rift s with a 2080 and it's far from ideal already. Mostly medium settings and no large airports.

If you were OK with the performance on the HP, maybe see if you can get your hands on a Samsung Odyssey+.  It's a step-up in terms of image quality, but not too much more demanding (vertical is 1600 instead of 1440 if I remember correctly).

With the Quest 2 or other headset you can just lower the render resolution in MSFS or OpenXR toolkit to improve performance. You're not forced to run at the headset's native resolution. You can run MSFS in the Quest 2 at Rift S resolution if that gives you acceptable performance. Also the Quest to can run at 72 Hz, which also improves performance a little. The Rift S is limited to 80 Hz only. So I would say that you have more options with a Quest 2 compared to the Rift S.

But if you're on a limited budget, the Rift S is quite OK for flight sims. I had a Rift S before my Quest 2 and used it for hundred of hours in P3D and IL-2.
