Yes another question about the 5800X3D

Recommended Posts

I know there a lot of topics about this CPU.
There are a lot of benchmarks but they are all different.

So are there any FS2020 simmers who upgraded from a I7-10700K to the 5800X3D in combination with a 3080/3090.
And was it worthwhile ?
Less stutter and more FPS ?

For around 300 euro I can change my system into a 5800X3D system. (selling the other I7 parts)

I have a 3080 and upgraded my 5600X to a 5800X3D and the difference is amazing.  £440 for the new CPU and got £170 for my old one on ebay.

It's currently the best CPU around at the moment for msfs and even seems to outperform the new generation AMD CPUs due to the big L2 cache.

I'm sure you won't regret the upgrade if you go for it, though you will need a new mobo of course which does make it a more expensive switch.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you do other stuff besides gaming that needs a very fast CPU (like video compiling etc...) you're better of with a non 3D CPU because they are slow "compared" to non 3D CPU's.
But if you don't mind that opening your mail program now takes 0.2 secs instead of 0.1 secs, the 5800X3D is a great chip.

It is only about 10% slower for regular stuff (than the 5800x), you won't notice unless your a developer (and you still won't notice, but you might want to wait in this case for the 7800x3D which is out around Feb - Mar). The issue is I think the 7800x3D going to come out around $499 to $599, so probably not worth waiting anyhow.

So my advice, GOPHER IT

Well I did it..
Ordered the 5800X3D and Motherboard.
I got the 5800X3D for 319 EURO !!
It's all I want to invest and pricewise this seems the best option for FS2020

Keep us posted on if it’s worth it. I have a 10700k and a Ryzen 5600x system so I could easily upgrade the 5600x but don’t know if it’s really worth it. Do most of my flight simming on the 10700k system.

Definitely worth it Jason , see my post above. Hard to quantify but it was well worth the upgrade if you have a decent graphics card.  Not sure how much you will benefit on anything less than an RTX 3000 series though.

Have a 3090 in one and a rx 6800 in the other so not really gpu limited.

Yes I ordered, but still thinking about I7-13700K....
I can still undo the order and return it

And compared with a 5900x, how it performs?

At the moment I have a I7-10700K.

CPU is the bottleneck.

1080P or 4K same FPS

Wanted to upgrade to a 5800X3D but also thinking about the I7-13700K

Wanted to revisit this. Went from a 5600x to the 5800x3d and the difference is substantial. In one scenario  I went from around 50 fps to around 93 fps. Went from main thread limited to GPU limited in many cases with a rx 6800xt. This is a hard chip to cool though. It runs hot.

What are you cooling it with?

I'm still waiting for the 7800x3D or whatever they end up calling it.

It’s a 240 mm aio. Part of the problem was my gigabyte motherboard was giving it too much voltage. It was sitting at 70C on the desktop! I corrected that and in game performance is better but it still gets up over 80c in an all core load quickly.

That doesn't sound right. On the Win 10 balanced power plan, my CPU Tdie is registering between 36.5°C and 37.9°C while typing this post.

I'm running an air cooled setup with a Noctua NH-D15 cooler and 2x 140mm fans at the front of my case. My CPU usually sits between 67°C and 74°C in MSFS, typically reaching 74°C - 78°C in more demanding scenarios.
Rarely hit my max. temperature of 82°C. That only happens when I throw the kitchen sink at my CPU, i.e. overcast weather, lots of AI, payware airport, payware city scenery, payware airliner and even then, CPU temp above 80°C lasts for just a few seconds.

My MSFS settings:

How demanding are your settings in MSFS?

Perhaps consider editing your fan curves to get the fans working sooner and make the polling time faster, so that they are more responsive to temp spikes.
