Why are prop textures made to look like a photograph?

When you look at a prop in real life you don't see the individual blades for the most part, just a transparent disc, but I see so many add on developers creating prop textures that appear as they would in a photo, where you can see the individual blades. What is the reason for this? Why are they trying to simulate a photopraph and not reality? It may be useful for screenshot art but my flight experience in FSX is not a screenshot. I don't know, when I was standing six or seven feet from a turning prop on a C-121 or a P-3, they had a substantial look of a disc to them not terribly different from the FS representations.I've never seen a helicopter in real life look like the photo.The rotors are a shimmering disk, not individual blades.But you have the basic essence of the issue in your subject.When stopped FS can model individual blades - but no way any computer today can be powerful enough to model individual blades spinning at speed - so they have to use an image to represent the disc effect.

Well I searched for that thread for nearly 15 mins and didn't find it. None of the keywords I use bring up anything similar, which sucks as I would like to see that thread.

Doesn't it all have to do with time of day-lighting conditions?I've got loads of real shots-and they all look different due to all the different conditions of light/time of day.Can fsx cover all of them?-pretty close-but lots of room for improvement-like all areas of the sim. Yeah but all "real shots" are still a moving image captured on film, and you can certainly change the image with shutter speed, making it freeze the prop as if its not moving, or even make it totally blurry like the transparent disc. Common shutter speeds will make the prop blurred but still showing the individual blades, which you cannot see with the naked eye, except maybe when the prop is at low RPM, or if you blink real fast you can see them. I would just prefer the prop textures simulate what I see with my eye, not what a camera captures on film.

Prop animations in FS drive me nuts. I've flown about 40 hours in C172s, and not once have I found that the prop bothered me. But 1 min looking at one in FS and I have a headache. I think a lot of it has to do with stutters / lower framerate. Either way I just edit them all out, replacing the prop textures with a blank / transparent one.

Either way I just edit them all out, replacing the>prop textures with a blank / transparent one.I actually prefer a bit of prop texture instead of a totally invisible one ( from the cockpit view), even if it shows much more than the real thing. It's just one of those things that add's to the immersion, since we've only got sight and sound to do the job. Kind of like that old flight sim, where a sound of air burbles during flap deployment somehow conveyed the sense of slowing down with drag.What I don't like, is decreasing the prop rpm, and then seeing too much of the prop rotating at different speeds as in the "chopper" pics. I'd just prefer a slight hint of a prop disc. For twins, such as the P-38 pics, I like to see rotating disc's from either the exterior or cockpit; as once again, it's an immersion thing. L.Adamson
