Gsync Ultimate: how is its HDR in MSFS?

Recommended Posts

Posted in Monitors but no replies in 52 views so hoping someone here has experience.  Near as I can tell the diff between hardware Gsync (true Gsync module present, not "compatible") and Ultimate is HDR.  From reading various posts about HDR here I get the sense it's not an obvious winner in MSFS.  The cost for Gsync Ultimate ranges from 40 to 100% more expensive than regular hardware Gsync w/o HDR.

I'm convinced after our friend Cpt_Piett verified Frametime Variance is very low w/ true hardware Gsync, so am getting serious about changing screens.  I have a perfectly good nonGsync Dell 34" curved 3440x1440 screen right now and I don't know what I can do with it I guess try to sell it.  I briefly considered an Alienware 38" 3860x1600 Gsync Ultimate for $1100 but it adds 25% more pixels at the same pixel density so it really offers nothing, the size increase that is as I will just end up moving it farther from my eyes, and yet will surely add some work to the CPU at some level and right now I don't want any additional load on my CPU or even a future CPU it's just not worth it.

Alienware makes a 34" Quantum DOT OLED curved Gsync Ultimate screen for $1142.  I often times leave my screen on all day w/o a screen saver.  Is using a screen saver or turning of the screen the way to prevent problems w/ OLED?

Alienware also makes a 34" regular hardware Gsync 3440x1440 display for about $645 now.  No HDR.

LG's only 34" 3440x1440 w/ Gsync Ultimate for $896 now so this is the lowest priced Gsync Ultimate display I could find so far.

So what do y'all think or should I say, know:  is Gsync Ultimate's HDR 600 a good thing or bad thing for MSFS?

I have the new Alienware OLED Ultrawide and it's amazing. But you should definitely add in a screensaver or enable auto-off after X minutes. It has built-in pixel refresher after a certain number of hours so it's difficult to have burn in but you can do it if it you really try hard enough. Just enable a simple screensaver after X mins of inactivity and you'll be good.

Is it Gsync Ultimate?  If so, how is its HDR600 in MSFS?  Thanks

it is g-sync ultimate. It also has HDR1000! however I'm currently working through an issue where I'm unable to get HDR in MSFS working at the moment. But I utilize its HDR1000 in other games and it's simply stunning. So I imagine when I get it to work in MSFS it will be similarly fantastic.

How is it no working if you will?  Enable it, and nothing changes?

correct. flipping HDR10 settings in MSFS on and off produces no discernable effect for me, so I know something isn't working correctly. Probably something wrong in my settings or configs. actually made a post about it: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/626300-can-you-tell-which-one-is-hdr/

I have new Asus pg42uq oled. For HDR, I have to go from fullscreen mode to window mode (Alt-Enter), move the screen a bit and HDR is enabled. It's a bug in MSFS.

Edit.: I see that you already tried it.

Well, could close the thread now as I just took the plunge.  After doing a lot of review reads I decided this display is the best fit for me:

LG 34GP950G-B 34 Inch Ultragear QHD (3440 x 1440) Nano IPS Curved Gaming Monitor with 1ms Response Time and 144HZ Refresh Rate and NVIDIA G-SYNC Ultimate with Tilt/Height Adjustable Stand - Black

Here's why:

  • G-sync Ultimate w/ HDR600.  Not quite what you get w/ OLED of course, but good enough for now as my current Dell 3415UW doesn't support any HDR, and it's already pretty good!  Contrast ratio is over double what my Dell produces and that is before HDR kicks in
  • There is no issue w/ burn-in as well as longevity which can be an issue w/ OLED tech, though QD is touted to help some in this regard.
  • The screen surface has an effective anti-reflective matte finish which is touted to very much limit any blurring, and in my fun room it's possible to get some nasty reflections.
  • Local dimming is marginal compared to OLED of course, but better than none depending on content, and MSFS will likely do fairly well in this regard
  • This screen will last me until MicroLED arrives in the PC monitor space--that tech I will spring for if it's as good as it *should* be!
  • I'll never go 4K it's simply not worth the 40% increase in load for me, GPU and some CPU.

Cheers and thanks for your inputs!

i've tried to alt-enter to change between full screen and windowed, however i haven't tried to wiggle the screen trick. i'll see if that does anything

Yes, that is the important step. Simply alt-enter doesn't work.

yes, Alienware is Gsync Ultimate and works perfectly in MSFS. HDR is amazing MSFS in general.

Ah but once you try it there's no going back lol

Looking forward to hearing your experience. I am hanging on for Black Friday in the hope of a $500 48 inch Oled TV 🤣

Thanks, I'll be sure and not try until the hardware can deliver the Holy Grail:  near nil Frametime Variability @ 60+FPS in the PMDG 738 at FT's KLAS w/o a single hitch.  Depending on screen size, viewing distance the limiting factor won't be pixel density it will be the native textures.  IOW, this image will look no better in 4K than at 1280 x 1024.  In fact it may look worse....just like people on TV/Movies that have nasty skin look worse in 4K than in 1080p!  Just zoom in on textures in MSFS and get a real taste of low resolution, much worse than this image!

spacer.png

That is an exaggerated example to make the point.  Pixel density at 48" has to suck even at 4K 😂
