Which Traffic offers the best control over traffic density?

Johan, does AI Companion also let you limit the number of aircraft in the air as well?

Yes and also some  fine tuning is possible (e.g. keep flights above 25000 ft)

Here's a screen from the traffic limiter's options. Lots of options.

But the download of the compaion in the AIG forum was disabled as it is not working with SU11 I thought.

woops just notice this 😱 ... yep i removed the link because MSFS AIC is pretty much on hold, unfortunately MSFS AI state and SDK limitations does not allow me to bring the tool up to what i was hoping it to be for MSFS, so i pretty much gave up for now temporarily 😥 .... as you may know this has been available for p3d for several years and i was very happy about it and i was using it all the time (especially the limiter which i was using 100% of the time) but when i started porting it to MSFS it ended up in frustration and i even had to remove some features (like the cool ai camera follow that is not suppported in MSFS) 😵.

The tool was mainly developped for BGL traffic, then huge effort to make to be 100% compatible with AIG Traffic controller and it's new technology.

now what made me remove the link (i think a link is still available in one of the post in the main thread, start from the bottom 🙃).

  • with BGL traffic (hand made, simple traffic, other bgl traffic, standard msfs traffic, JF traffic i guess when it comes out) i think everything was working properly until SU10. Unfortunatly my tests with SU11 seemed to show that BGL traffic is now a big mess. Planes spawned in the sim do not match anymore with what is inside the BGL, it's completely crazy and so buggy that AIC turns out to be completely useless because it relies heavily on the BGL schedule and will not show accurate info if that's messed up. Most people won't even notice (as long as there are some AI in the sim they might think all is ok), but for me it's not possible releasing something that i know is not up to the standard i wished it was.
  • With AIG (Traffic controller) traffic it should actually work fairly well. But the problem is that my tool needs to communicate with traffic controller (via something called a WCF service). This doesn't require anything from the user and all is done automatically but if for some reason the communication is blocked on your pc it starts to get a bit technical and diffcult to debug. Relying on TC also means that i can not control everything anymore, so if there are issues i can't really help which is very frustrating for me.
  • With 'in sim' live traffic it probably doesn't work at all (i have never even enabled that option so i don't really know 😛)
  • Lots of people now use FSLTL or PSXeecon kind of injectors, injectors are not based on pre-made schedules so AIC is not really matched for that. Traffic limiter i think will not work at all with those injectors because only the injector can delete its own aircraft, so yeah if you're using one of those injectors you can probably forget the aic traffic limiter
  • To make even more difficult most people now use a mix of all the solutions above and that makes support almost impossible because they might end with a mix of all the issues mentioned above and it's not easy to make everything clear.

oh well to sum, for now i have given up (and it hurts a bit because AIC was my little beloved baby for years and i will certainly work on it again if the situation improves) 😥

sorry for a bit long post that not many people will read thoroughly 😁, but at least if you are interested you will know what to expect if you try it depending on what AI you use and why it might not work properly for you.

Take care 🍻

It have not noticed any problems with AI Companion and MSFS real-time traffic. I haven't tried all limiter options, but limit numbers by air/ground, distance and player altitude appear to be working fine.

I'm confused as usual!  Does it work now?  Is it available to download if so where?  It sounds perfect!

As far as I can tell the limiter works with MSFS real-time online traffic. Other functionality may be limited depending on the type of traffic you are using (MSFS, AIG injector, FSLTL injector).

Thank you Johan I will see if I can get it to work!

@Noel is not going to like it 🙈🙈

please read my post above about limitations otherwise you'll just think it's the worst thing you ever downloaded (and well it will hurt my sensible feelings if you post that here given the 100's of hours spent on that free tool over the years 😍), and yeah if i didn't post the link it's because i know people will find it difficult to use without guidance and most will trash it (and probably won't give it another chance again when/if things get better with MSFS AI, but well that will probably never happen), but no worry @Johan217 i don't mind if you posted the direct link, it won't harm anybody for sure 🍻

-edit- oh just seen noel reply now, posted at the same time ....

Goodness and yet others think it works w/ sim live traffic!   Geez I guess I should skip it!  Something nasty happened w/ live traffic and SU11 it is generating serious overhead even when there isn't much live traffic visible.  Hopefully they will address this until then I have to keep traffic off for the most part.

@Bad_T I understand it must be very frustrating to see all your hard work undone by undocumented changes in MSFS, but really: AI companion is STILL a great tool and you may be deservedly proud of it! Yes, some functions are severely limited, but it is still very useful to see what models are being used, limit traffic, view the parking spots at an AFCAD and view installed liveries in 3D, and all in 1 programme.

The only real live traffic option is PSXT as it is and with that you shouldn't need to use a limiter as it has its own options. It all depends on what method you are using for traffic.

Here here! 🍻  I've used it since the day it became available and it has been invaluable over the many years. Thank you Koala!

Right now I use Realtime Online w/ Simple Traffic.  My understanding is RTOT uses FlightAware or some such and so has largely matched real live traffic, or delayed live traffic as it were--so apparently LittleNavMap uses the same source as I see the same planes/airlines in both sim and LNM.

I've lost interest in substantial configuration and setup requirements, and I do use default ATC, which I understand PSXT is not going to play with well.  Does FSLTL allow one to limit traffic density?

So right now what is the most straightforward path to limiting the number of aircraft that may be affecting performance in MSFS?  Is it AI Companion or no?  There are new issues w/ RTOT and SU11 but I'm sure that will be addressed and hopefully soon so maybe this becomes moot.

I guess it's really about compromise. FSLTL makes it easy to adjust the traffic with a slider/toolbar. I end up turning a great deal of traffic close to off on approach so the sim doesn't load 80 planes at once at the airport I am landing at.

Yes, and that is one of the reason I'm still using it, even with the limitations introduced by SU11 (very few landing AI).

  • the models look very good
  • the sound effects are great
  • the visual effects (contrails, smoke upon touchdown) are great
  • it's very easy to install
  • it's very easy to configure (amount of IFR aircraft, amount of parked (static) aircraft, injection radius)

Right now there are issues with real-time online traffic:

  • model matching (with FSLTL and AIG models/liveries) are much worse compared to pre-SU11
  • the amount of traffic is not configurable and will bring my rig to a halt at major hubs

I highly recommend giving FSLTL a try. Just download the FBW installer and install it from there.

Of course a lot of people prefer PSXT/Real Traffic and that's fine (that they prefer it). I've tried it and it's not the best solution for me.
