Need Explanaion of a Few Symbols

Featured Replies

When landing, next to the speed tape are the following symbols:  Y, G, R,  and X.  What do they mean?

Tom

R-Rotate Speed (speed that you lift the nose up on take off)

X-Best angle climb (speed to climb at to achieve the most altitude over the least distance)

G-Glide speed (speed to achieve maximum range when gliding, eg after an engine failure)  I think this flaps but may be wrong on that.

Y-Best rate climb (speed to achieve the most altitude gain over the least amount of time)

I'm sure some other more experienced types can add more nuance to this.

Hope that helps

Cheers

No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.

Hello Tom.

Here is a link to a Wiki article relating to V speeds in aviation. The letter V equates to the word Velocity. There are quite a few sites showing information regarding the V speeds. Well worth an online search.

One of those, 'I always wondered but never liked to ask'.  Many thanks to @tjrush for actually having asked 🙂

Think Lord Farringdon meant to write 'I think this is without flaps.'

Yes that is correct @The_Flying_Potatoand my apologies @hansb57 for the poor grammar. Hard enough for a native English speaker to understand that let alone someone for whom English is not their first tongue.

Best glide speed is usually stated for no flaps and max gross weight.  If you are not fully loaded, best glide speed will be a fraction lower.
