Is there a foolproof way of setting the Rolling Cache size?

Recommended Posts

I deleted my Rolling Cache, and would like set a new value for the new one... but cannot figure it out.

When I enable the cache, it asks for a value which is set at 0 to start.

If I key in 8, I get 80, but when deleting the trailing zero get an error.  If I enter 8.  I also get an error.

If I move to the right and attempt a backspace, I also get an error..

Does anyone have a keystroke by keystroke sequence to get past this?

That's weird. This doesn't happen to me. It always puts me before the zero so I enter the number I want then delete the zero without problem. I'm not sure what's going on there.

Think I found it...  "8 - right arrow - backspace - enter"

Yes, that's what I do. May I ask what you were doing to get an error, exactly?

@Bert Pieke at the risk of asking a question that's been previously answered elsewhere, is there a reason for choosing a specific cache size, i.e., 8GB? As opposed to 10, 20, 30 or higher.

The bigger the cache the bigger the area the sim can cache and therefore doesn't have to download when you are flying over that area. If you fly over the same area most of the time, it's useful. If not, probably not worth having one to be honest.

I think I may have forgotten the "Enter"

Ahh, yes, I could see that might do it.

Ha! I did way too much reading on this subject about a year ago.  Came across the 8GB faction (users), the 32GB faction (users), read a piece by an Asobo engineer and came up with, for the pattern of geography I fly most often, a value of 40 GB.  A year of flying with that size rolling cache, routinely emptied and recreated on a totally random schedule, appears to have taught me this.  Even with an internet connection of >250 mbps, there is no way my connection can keep up with the transfer rate from my SSD.  So I soldier on with the 40 GB rolling cache, perceiving absolutely no benefit, but knowing it somehow must be there.  LOL!

I just deleted and reestablished it two days ago!

Did anyone figure out what's in the cache ? Is it just ground textures or more than that ?

Never used RC but interested in any benefits (current gripe: to overcome 2 or 3 large stutters/frame grabs on final app under 1000ft) but overall scenery load would be interesting to see.

For the all the years and sim flying and tweaking, the Rolling Cache sure is a weird one.  Its normally not so hard to judge whether you've made an improvement or not.  Should we be frustrated we can't eek a few extra frames out of using it over home soil, OR, just to be thankful and in awe of ASOBO's programming that the sim soldiers on streaming such enormous quantities of high quality data is such an incredibly robust fashion??!

Hmm, think I'm 75% in favour of the latter right now  🙂

Is this not totally defeating the point of having a rolling cache? Why build up 40 GB of data on your local drive only to delete it every month or so?

Unless you only fly in your home circuit, and why would you when the entire planet has been created to explore in all its glory, I cannot see any value in using rolling cache.

On the other hand it takes up a lot of space on your drive, is constantly writing data to your drive, thus accelerating its demise as SSD and Nvme drives lifespan is linked to the number of writes (yes, it is a huge number but still), and that in itself surely uses extra CPU cycles. I only see negatives in using it.
