Are clouds really better in FSX?

Recommended Posts

There has been some mention that the clouds can be much better rendered in FSX than FS 9 with Active Sky or even default weather. Have folks found this to be true?Greg

Yes, I'd definitely say that FSX's default clouds are better than FS9's defaults. And with products like ASX/X-Graphics and the very superb looking Flight Environment X, clouds in FSX are looking like the real thing.Vox

Most certainly. Thee has been a definite improvement in the aesthetics and realism of clouds in FSX. I guess sometimes we may overlook this aspect of the latest incarnation of FS, but it's there. Visually from a distance, as well as the experience of entering and exiting cloud formations is closer to reality than in any other previous version.

Yes, definitely much better plus the irritating FS9 'dancing clouds' problem is solved.

ASG's Cirrus and Stratus are pretty nice, the cumulus on the other hand look horrid IMO. FEX looks superb, can't wait to get my hands on it. :D

Have to agree, I haven't found one cumulus set in ASGX that I like yet. They all look too 'cartoony'.

Hello, I found the weather in fsx is a bit better overall but still buggy, but worst on the clouds format, look like compressed format and make cartoon clouds, clouds rotate face to the aircraft. ASX engine improve the weather and the graphics offer higher resolution clouds then default fsx with option which improve a bit the cartoon effect.http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...id=261666&page=XP SP2Asus P4GD1 Intel 3.4GhzDDR 400 D/C 2 gigGforce 512MB 8 series SB AudigyCH Products Yoke/Pedals USB

Which cumulus set is that? That looks much better than any I have tried so far.

Yes. Convincing? That depends on your degree of parochialism and/or imagination. Without the appropriate light effects (shadows etc..) and without the burgeoning, solid-looking texture, cumuli are not anywhere close to what they are in real life. Period. Cunims are even worse. Cirri are OK but are mostly background. Never tried to fly through them. Strati are kinda OK but stratus-soup is way unconvincing, both over and under. On the whole, this is one of the areas that needs a complete re-conception. Developers do the best they can but I'm afraid this is not only about art. They are limited by tons of other factors that they can't do nothing about.

Absolutely-but an improvment in fsx over past versions-also absolutely...fsx with active sky x/xgraphics vs. reality-getting closer than ever before...and a lot cheaper too... :-)http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpgForum Moderatorhttp://geofageofa.spaces.live.com/http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176036.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176037.jpg
