January 13, 20233 yr Good morning. Is it there a way to see which words are included in the profanity filter that is installed in these forums? Yeah, someone may say "just write as if you were speaking with friends, in front of your mother". However, some words may pass this common sense filter (i.e., my mom would have no issues if I say them), but not the one here at Avsim, and you need to rework/remove the whole idea just because of this (IMO) overzealous filter. Maybe it's not yet frustating, but a bit annoying indeed if you have to rely on just trial-and-error. January 13, 20233 yr Administrators There is no way to see it! Not even for the AVSIM Moderation team. If you feel the need for profanity, may I suggest going over to REDDIT! January 13, 20233 yr Luis, as someone who has been suspended more than once for inappropriate posts and language, I suggest you double check whatever you write for spelling, grammar, and inappropriate words that the filter missed (yes, there are some). Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
January 14, 20233 yr I think what the OP is getting at is that there are a lot of words on the filter that are not “profanity” in even the broadest sense. I’ve stumbled on these by accident several times. As best I can tell, the idea behind filtering them is that they could be intended pejoratively in anger, but some have left me scratching my head…

The Word Filter can be set to include any word or phrase that the administrators deem to be in need of automatic censorship. They do not necessarily need to be universally accepted as "profanity" to qualify and indeed, some may be simply there to correct common spelling mistakes. The substitute can also be anything, including the correct spelling, for example. "word not allowed", is just the phrase chosen by whoever set the forum up in the first place. I think that the whole question is really the business of the administrator, whose choices, opinions and rules are the last word in any online forum, whether an individual forum user likes them or not. There is always the option to go elsewhere to express your views in the way that you want to. Edited January 14, 20233 yr by Reader
