PMDG Update

Yeah I don’t know what a EFB is going to give me. I just save a .pln file from SB. Import it. Off you go. The shirt flights I enter in myself. Other than that it’s all been the same since FS9.

Not uniformly true.  My airline's uplink utility to our 737s does include SIDs and STARs.  Now, if you get a DCL via CPDLC that contains a route change, loading those changes will not include SID/STARs (and will possibly cause the existing one to drop).  So that has to be monitored carefully.  But yep, initial route uplink always includes any filled SIDs/STARs.

Yes, I suppose it depends on company SOPs and data provider, and also make and model of FMS and ACARS. Our company (Part 91 corporate) uses ARINC Direct, and downloaded FPs normally do not include STARS - with the exception of flights to KCLT, which always use the CHSLY5 arrival, and that will be included for our Falcon aircraft, but not for Proline4 equipped CRJs, which literally cannot accept a SID or STAR via ACARS - only enroute waypoints.

The funny thing is, some of the features of these EFBs are actually unrealistic conveniences, for the sim world.  Eg. In any airliner, there is no independent tablet based device that uploads to the FMCs.   Flight plan uplink in the 737 and the A3XX is done via the FMC / MCDU.

Tablets transferring live data to avionics is a GA feature (see 'Garmin Pilot'). Airliner avionics are certified beyond recognition.  The only way for data to get into the FMC is through the.... FMC, or via ATCOs and AOS that send data on aircraft such as the 787, using closed-loop Honeywell terminals for the transfer of data.  You can't just get some V speeds and a flightplan from a ipad and 'send them to the FMC' in real life.   PERF INIT, WX and FPs can be sent remotely to the FMC, but not by the pilot, and not via a tablet.

Tablets are used extensively in airliners of course - but their use is as the name intended - "electronic flight bag" : charts, performance data, flight plans, weather, etc.

But the step of entering the correct data into the FMC is the responsibility of the PIC.  You won't find an ATPL after an accident saying "well it had the right numbers on my iPad".

In this regard, some of these EFBs, while fantastically complex and convenient for us in the sim world, are not realistic to true airline operations, in terms of what they can "plug in" for you.

I have both AC .. Its the same time frame.. I think some people are having a wail about simbrief import but dont want to spare the 1 time expense of setting up the simbrief downloader. That's on them.

No, it's on PMDG - and stop with the excuses, the run arounds, two step side way shuffle - it all amounts to the same conclusion: PMDG is struggling to supply features that are available in freeware mods.

It's 2023, the "Simbrief Downloader" should have been retired a long time ago.

Also not a leg you'd likely see a bus doing in reality.  If you're going to / from large airline airports, then yes it'll be unusual not to have departure and arrival procedures.

I'm just going to assume you've been to KORD or KEWR. While the route on FlightAware etc. typically only shows the first enroute fix, you would still be cleared via and fly a SID like O'Hare 5 or Liberty 4, right?

Fenix Import Simbrief FP.. One button on the EFB Mass and Balance, one button in the EFB ( load) Flightplan is already in the MCDU, setup init is just copying weight and balance from EFB, V speeds are copied from EFB. Done.  5 minutes.

It takes me half of that time to completely setup the 737 FMC when I've saved the route in the PMDG .rte database via PFPX route export function.

Regarding V-Speeds: you don't need to calculate them, just click 1R, 2R, 3R to enter them automatically.
With one exception: V1 is wrong. Out of Lugano (to be fair on the very edge of what is possible in terms of short runways for departure), FMC gave me V1 133kt, VR 136kt and V2 at 147kt.

If I had to abort t/o close to V1, I'd have came to a stop a kilometer after the RWY end 😂

I agree with you. I'm back to simulation after few years. I agree with you. Is it possible to put data for the flight plan directly to the FMC / MCDU? or now its all automatic from the EFB? i love to insert every single waypoint on the FMC/MCDU

I'm enjoying the product. You want to keep crying over a missing an EFB be my guest. I don't give a rats word not allowed about the fact that others have an EFB. FBW / Fenix and company aren't PMDG and they have clearly different ways of going about things and different programming platforms that they have to work with. The fact that you feel entitled to ignore that is certainly not my problem ..

And spare me your bs about its 2023 .. some of the most mission critical code in use today was written as far back as the seventies and early eighties. Properly written code does not get old if the desired output remains the same.

Those freeware mods are not trying to do the same thing. How many times do people need to be told this before the information finds a neuron worthy of the task?

They are struggling, and for the reasons RSR has previously outlined numerous times.  “The beatings will continue until morale improves” - is that the point?

I only miss the performance calculations from the NGXU and its  back to topcat which stills do the job .

Other stuff is a bonus. I have 2 external tablets for Navigraph and flightplan.

Hopefully the -900 can be lifted now.

Yep exactly.  Those aren't RNAV SIDs and so they aren't typically part of a filed flight plan, but they're the minority these days by far.

You’ve got that right.

The autopilot modules in the Collins Proline 4 avionics system found on every CRJ-200, -700 and -900 flying today, contains two CPUs: an 8-bit 6502 - the very same processor that powered the Apple II and Commodore 64 - and an 16-bit 8086 - the same processor used by the original IBM PC in 1981.
