Is Frame Generation Good For MSFS?

Recommended Posts

If you are in a cpu limited scenarios below 30 fps then frame generation will not help much, it will stutters with fg on. Staying above 30 fps is really important. So you should have a good cpu even if you have a 4000 series cards with fg.

So if you have 25 fps + FG you see stutters ?

Its not about at least 30 fos. It is about trying to avoid long frames.

If you have a solid 25 fos  without long frames + FG it will look quiet smooth.

That's not my experience. If I'm in a complex aircraft, complex weather and complex airport, a dip down to 25 - 27 FPS in the sim will still produce 50-54 FPS with FG on, and feel very smooth. But you're right in that you're still restrained by the CPU, and it determines the final output of the FG technology. I'm just saying FG helps in those low FPS scenarios as well.

I find it's incredibly smooth if I can max the FPS at 60 and use vsync in the NCP.  Any lower (usually in the mega cities like LHR or with poorly optimized addons) and it stutters obviously but even trying to limit it to a lower setting and changing my monitor refresh rate I would get stutters.  60 is the magic number so yeah about 30 without FG.

Sell my 3080ti when the dusts settles.

man’s get a 4090 or 4080ti

Prices   of gpus now are ridiculous.

Thats not my experience. If i put myself at EGLL in the PMDG with heavy AIG AI Traffic I can become CPU limited and have my FPS drop down to low 20s. If I turn on frame generation it will usually get up to 40-50 and it becomes silky smooth. No tearing and not stuttery.

@spitzer45 what card do you have?

I have 4090 and 10700k cpu, I’m very cpu limited at big hubs even without ai traffic and tlod 150. I will change my cpu with 7950x3d, so it will definitely will be better.

Screens shouldnt be blurry unless you are using AMD sharpening or DLSS

If you use TAA they are clear and crisp. You dont need DLSS to run FG

Quick question to all you 4080 owner's ....

I believe you need DX12 to run with FG on, have you seen any issues with 16GB VRAM on this card? It is tax return season and I am expecting the nice government to issue my refund soon and was thinking of selling my EVGA FTW3 3090 for a 4080. I have been using DX12 for a week now and have seen VRAM usage up to 18GB. I am currently at cruise in the Fenix over the South of England and my VRAM is sitting at just under 13GB.

I do run a 55 inch Sony X90K at 4K and have no desire to try VR so the 4080 appears to tick all the boxes and the 4090 doesn't seem worth the extra investment for my usage. Not sure what sort of power a 4080 draws under load but I do have a Seasonic Gold Plus 1000W

2) I do have a Seasonic Gold Plus 1000W

1) less than the 3090, but more importantly than pure power draw were the sudden extreme load spikes of the 3090, which the 4000 series has overcome fortunately.

2) that's plenty

you will enjoy FrameGeneration! 👍

Thank you,

I do have an undervolt in place on my 3090 and it typically draws around 320w

What is frame rate generation?  Where can it be set?

I just bought a 4090 and I’m using TAA with FramGen and I took off from LAX (IniBuilds) in the PMDG 73 during a VATSIM event with a ton of traffic and my FPS never went below 55. This is actually insane. I had no idea that these cards are so much more powerful than the 3080ti I use to have.

We’re you using HD or SD textures at iniBuilds LAX? If HD, any lag or stuttering when panning around? Using any head tracking software?
