Getting up to speed with the CJ4…

Featured Replies

So i have gone from the WB Sim 172 to the Black Square Caravan to the HondaJet. All three are fantastic. Yesterday i decided to give the WT CJ4 a try. I am using the MSFS beta, if that matters. Ultimately i will be moving up to the PMDG 737 at some point so i just wanted to try something a bit more challenging. While the CJ4 is far from study level, as many switches don’t work, the core seems to be there. Currently i have two issues.

First, the plane is super twitchy. The plane really feels like it has no weight in the air. I don’t want to mess with my controller settings, because all my other planes feel good. But the CJ4 just feels strange.

The second issue is the big one. I cannot get the autopilot to work properly. I watched a few videos, but they didn’t really help. Can anyone point me to a decent guide or video that works with the latest version of the CJ4?

Thanks.

This is what has kept me from bothering with this airplane. Zero inertia, every time I would roll the plane left or right it would remind me more of an Extra 300 rather than a GA jet. It stood out enough to really bother me so I walked away from it pretty fast. Not too difficult though to add some inertia, if those values are still accessible, but I haven't yet bothered due to other better offerings that didn't require me to fidget like we're all so accustomed to...

...I find as I get older I have less patience for fixing and just prefer to use products that work in a way that's more aligned with my own personal preferences.

Regarding the a/p question....have you seen this one yet?

How to Program the Citation CJ4 FMS - AAU1 - Microsoft Flight Simulator - YouTube

I havent watched it but the title seems like it might be useful?

You can find the CJ4 Operator's Guide here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qzxPMTSQRkvau8QOi7xUqNvjx9rbww_qHlso5AT5OnI/edit

This Guide was written for the original CJ4 mod by Working Title and therefore is no longer up to date after the AAU1 but the basics are still valid.

From what I’ve heard, it is like that in real life too. Like seats attached to a space rocket.

What beta? I don't see any beta version after 1.30.12, and that went live 2 weeks ago and is current release.

You might have missed WT's suggestion to remove any and all CJ4 mods from your Community folder.

Thanks. It provides a lot of useful info. Now i just need step-by-step instructions to work the auto pilot. Seem to be struggling to get it to do that!

I point to the beta in steam, but yeah that is the same as the current release atm. All cj4 mods were removed before testing.

I have read that too but this just has no inertia. I can’t imagine it feels like this in RL.

If you're struggling to operate the CJ4, I suggest you visit WT'S Discord channel.

The flight model was adjusted using feedback from a number of real world CJ4 pilots. One thing that was consistent in their feedback was how light the plane feels on the controls. If you were to smack the control wheel all the way over you'd get a pretty serious roll rate. It's a fly with two fingers kind of plane, with very direct controls and an immediate cessation of roll when input is removed.

The mod flight model was not super accurate in a number of ways, certainly had much more of an airliner feel which the RL pilots found to be very unrealistic. However, when dealing with sim controls it's always a case of balancing various compromises, and so we're always looking for more ways to stay faithful to what the RL pilot testers ask for and what the greater sim community perceives from a feel perspective. I'm certain there will be continuous refinements as more sim updates occur.
