What is the benefit of Round earth?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me..what has been achieved and what can be achieved by the Round earth change in FSX? (without the provision for un even and sloping runways)Manny

I think the oceans will no longer flow off the edge.

Aren't the magnetic poles and great circle routing more correctly simulated also?Jeff

>>I think the oceans will no longer flow off the edge. >...but you do realize, with this round-earth notion, we run the risk of being excommunicated by the Church.@MannyIn all seriousness though, I do not know the benefits of round earth myself--I can think of a few things that might be benefits:1) better great circle/nav calculation2) more accurate placement of objects, coastlines, rivers, etc.3) future provision for sloped runways****would be nice, if trueRhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

>>I think the oceans will no longer flow off the edge. >Thats a frequent misunderstanding of those poor uninformed souls believing all that round earth propaganda !! Of course, its the ice of antarctica that stops the ocean water from flowing off the edge !!!See the proof here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth_Society... and if all that still doesnt convince you, just try some spherical geometry calculations to see that a round earth is a really baaaad idea ...*:-* :+ :-lol

That beautiful round earth model is exactly why I can't even look at FS9 anymore. Silly extended texure ring anyone? :)Its main advantage, at least for my SR-71 loving self, is that the world actually looks correct from 100,000 feet. Love it.I do wish the cloud stretching problem as you approach the poles could have been fixed though. Get up into northern Canada or Scandinavia they start to look awful weird, just as they did in FS9. At least the ground textures up there don't freak out like they used to though.

> At least the ground textures up there don't>freak out like they used to though.Fly in to South Pole Station (NZSP) - things definitely do get pretty weird... (you'll need skis, and the airport elevation is 9500ft). I think it'd be a real challenge to build a decent scenery for it!

Christian already won this thread with absolute certainty, but I wanted to say that the main benefit I see in having a round earth is that it's like real life.
