How to get throttle to work with amphibian aircraft on water

Featured Replies

For some unknown reason I find that the throttle on my joystick on NONE of my amphibian aircraft (Beaver, Cessna, Otter etc) operates correctly when flying from water.

If I fly from a (ground) runway the throttle works fine but on the water it keep returning to idle setting even though the throttle is set to max.

If I 'drag' the throttle in the cockpit with my mouse it too only briefly goes to where I want it but then returns to idle so I am sure if had nothing to do with my joystick and that it is something I need to set up.

Any ideas?

John

I didn't have any problem with the Beaver. Maybe try the default keyboard commands for throttle just to see if those work. That should help you figure out if it possibly is a joystick issue.

It doesn't sound like duplicate control bindings are the problem but it never hurts to check that one off the list. If you're creating new joystick profiles for each plane maybe double-check that the throttle axis is indeed assigned.

I don't know if any of your problem aircraft have default assignments done by the developer but when in doubt you can always check the manual.

Thanks

I checked keyboard assignments and they are F3 (key) increase throttle and F2 decrease

I checked (Logitech 3D) joystick profiles and there were 5 different ones default, helicopter, profile2, and prop   I had it set to prop

Anyway I deleted the last 2.

The problem continues. This is a problem only when taking off from water as mentioned. If I use any amphibian aircraft (beaver, cessna etc) the throttle will not stay where I set it always returning to idle.

Strangely when I use the same aircraft taking off from land I have NO problems so it is somehow linked to water takeoffs.

Also, as mentioned, if I use the mouse on the throttle (click on throttle and hold down left mouse button and drag)  I have the same problem. Once again I say it seems to be linked to water takeoffs.

As a last resort I disconnected the joystick and used the keyboard and mouse on the throttle. I still have the same problem. I never had any such problems before the last MSFS update.

Try disabling any 3rd party content in the community folder, and see if that helps.

I give up.

I have removed EVERYthing from the Community folder and my joystick is unplugged yet the throttle when on water will not work (I used the MSFS built in 02NH water runway as the water runway I was using was in the community folder).

Is there a way to get a fresh download of MSFS ie completely remove MSFS and download again. I have the download version.

I even set ALL ASSISTS to easy.

This is getting me down.

[added later]

I also tried to fix by doing a (windows) REPAIR.

To complement what CapnCrunch said upthread It sounds like a double assignment. If it does that only with a floatplane and when on water, it then may be an interaction of that sort between the water rudder, the only command needed on water, and the throttle.

Thanks Dominique.

That sounds quite likely but how do I check that?  I use CTRL W to lower and raise the rudder and joystick twist to control rudder movement  and they both seem to work correctly but I still have the same problems when I disconnect the joystick (unplug the usb connector).

I went into settings and found a couple of places where I could select 'reset to defaults' (or something like that) and I selected YES to both. I still have the problem.

And where is the file which contains all the controls assignments and what is it called so I can check that? Is there a method to set all controls back to default?

I believe that settings configurations etc are stored at C:/....appdata/local/packages/Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe

Is there any way to have the relevant (.cfg) files rebuilt automatically with defaults? If not I will uninstall MSFS and reinstall via the microsoft store.

Try turning OFF all assists, in case it's tryng to 'help' you in a way that's self-cancelling.

FWIW I fly with everything off except Copilot ATC.

Thanks   I have all assists set to EASY.

Sure, but it's possible that one of them is causing a conflict - I encountered something like that when I first tried MSFS, and turning OFF solved it. It would rule out that cause at the very least.

How do I turn OFF.

BTW for the record -

Just did something different with very interesting results.

I took off from Sechelt Gibbons (land) runway and the throttle worked as normal (the throttle always works when departing a land runway)

I flew to (my) water airport Sechelt/Porpoise Bay which is only a few minutes flight. I landed on the water and brought the aircraft to a stop.

I then applied full throttle and it worked as normal.

Took off and landed again on the water and brought aircraft to a stop then applied full throttle and it worked again.

I then started a NEW flight FROM my airport on the water and the throttle would not work again.

So it has something to do with starting a new flight from water. If I start a flight FROM land TO water, land and then take off again the throttle works but not a flight FROM water.

Any suggestions what it could be?

Did you try setting all assists to HARD? This assistance stuff can do very strange things and in my experience should always be turned off.

Go into Options->Assistance Options and open up Piloting.  Make sure Autorudder, Assisted Yoke and AI Autotrim are OFF.  Indeed I'd suggest making sure everything is OFF, by setting the group to HARD.

Oh, and thanks for the scenery tip - looks good!

Thanks. That worked.  I set all assists to hard and the throttle now works ok.

I don't want all assists to be hard though so which ones should I set to easy and which ones to medium or hard?
