7950x3D shaping up to demolish the 13900k in MSFS

6 months, 12 months, 2 years. Who really knows. The point I was trying to make was, if the 3xxx gen of GPUs are still limited by CPU, then wouldn’t the same be true for the 4xxx series? Sure, there is frame generation, but isn’t that just masking the underlying issue, which is being processor bound?

On various forums, I see folks praising the 4090 in VR. But they also talk about having to lower various settings to get good performance. I’m used to that, but for $2000 for the GPU alone, only for it to be surpassed by the next GPU for the same price in 6, 12, 24 months, it’s not really worth it in my eyes, especially since the problem, historically, has been the Main Thread. 
 

I’m very eager to see how the 7950x3D performs with 30 series cards.

Probably you have some motion smoother setting in the tv?, have sense, and respectable option like any other.

Yes it has motion smoothing or whatever it is called. Works pretty well. Not sure what you are trying to say with the second part of your post though.

It's getting to the point where the answer seems to be "no", or "does not apply", particularly at 4K in MSFS.  I don't consider FG "masking" anything, it is just another tool in the cubbard to help me not be cpu limited.  Or will be, once I have a card that can use it.   Ian can speak better to this point than I can, as he has this setup in practice already.

You could wait forever. Chances are when the 5 series is released, people will still be cpu limited due to some new fangled tech that they’ve released in the sim. 
The 4 series card is the greatest piece of hardware I’ve EVER purchased for flight sim. Who cares if I’m cpu limited and pulling in 100 frames? Not me. Don’t even notice it. Lowest frames I get are 55 in really heavy scenarios. Even IF it dropped to 50, I’d still be ecstatic. But to achieve 80-90-100 plus most of the time is just astonishing really. Chased that for decades. Like I’ve said previously, I don’t tweak anymore for performance. There is simply no need. 
Now, imagine someone advised me to hang around for the 5 series instead of going for the 4? I’d be missing out BIG time!

Amen to that! I just crank everything to the maximum and fly. Whenever I check on my 4090, it's cruising along cool and happy.

I *almost* typed that in my response to V1rotat7e above but held back because I don't own the hardware yet.   

I mean I theoretically could care just for the sake of technical interest, but for day-to-day flying, I'd rather just fly and forget it.

Your last comment struck a chord with me with a lowly 5900x / 3060TI combo.  This is because MSFS does such a good job with all platforms.  Both the CPU and GPU are maxed with all 12 cores busy and the GPU busy supporting my 1440 rez.

Given that I'm not doing VR a GPU upgrade seems like overkill.  Point is that given the economic strain most of us feel (also being retired) I'm perfectly happy with my current build.

Just sayin that MSFS is a great sim for those of us with not so deep pockets.

PS - I don't tweek for perfomance either.

FWIW, I’m upgrading my 9900k with the 7800x3d and while I have a 3090, will trade that in at the same time and get a 4090 put in. Should be good for 3 years or so with that set up. Still on the fence on whether to go with 32 or 64gb of RAM. Currently have 64 and run a few programs with MSFS so will depend on prices difference.

I went with 32gb. Had 64 in my previous system. Haven’t noticed any difference.

all of you flying only 2D should already be in heaven with 3090. We the unlucky ones sticking with VR are the ones suffering even with 4090.

I just upgraded from 10850K/4090 to 7950x3D/4090 and even this mighty pair could be down to the knees at 25fps when I'm flying low over the NYC skyscrapers (helicopter discovery flight). Of course, part to blame is that my settings are bit out of roof with like terrain LOD=400, object quality=200, nearly everything ultra, all traffic at 100% etc etc.

I fly with HP G2, DLSS quality and OpenXR scale = 225% (i.e. the VR resolution in MSFS is like 6000x5000 pixels). The video card routinely draws >400W, CPU around 80W. In "normal" area other than NYC, I got like 35-45fps in VR. Flying roof-top low at NYC makes me CPU limited, other areas I'm more GPU limited. So it's scary to think that to have perfect VR we're still about two generations away for both CPU and GPU.
