FSX Questions ( 3, Varied)

Recommended Posts

Guest pjmac35

I have FSX installed with SP1. I have three questions, the first of which involves a problem which only arose recently.1. After tranferring an FS2004 aircraft to FSX, When I go to Free Flight screen and select the new aircraft, the view of the A/c (which rotates slowly) appears for about a second then goes black. If I continue, the aircraft functions normally. Any ideas? I tried a System Restore the first time this happened, (with a FS2004 add-on, which had behaved normally up to then)then an uninstall and reinstall of FSX but no luck.2. When adjusting Video Options for my ATI 9600 card, should I be altering the Open GL or the Direct 3D settings for FS2004 and FSX?3. I have reinstalled FSX but inadvertently put it in the default folder. If I want to change this, is there any way other than uninstall then reinstall? Can I just install it again where I want it and then just manually delete the other one? (It's on a different drive). Thanks a lot

"2. When adjusting Video Options for my ATI 9600 card, should I be altering the Open GL or the Direct 3D settings for FS2004 and FSX?"D3D.Don't know about the others but I find it easier to install some addons if FS is in the "right" (default) folder.R-

My question is simply this. Why on earth are you (or anyone) "uninstalling and reinstalling" FS at all? That should be the very LAST recourse to problem solving. The reason for this is quite simple, actually.Uninstalling and reinstalling FS does NOT affect the various .cfg files - ever - which is where 99.9% of the problems reside."Step One" should always be to rename the fs9.cfg or fsx.cfg file, restart the sim and let it build a new one from scratch.Note that not once have I had to uninstall or reinstall FS9 in the six+ years since original installation.FSX has not been uninstalled or reinstalled since the original installation back in October, 2006... :)Your problem is either video driver related, or most likely since it's an FS9 "port over," a missing and/or corrupted bitmap in the a/c's texture folder.

1. Couldn't agree with you more, Bill. I have never reinstalled FS9 for the years that I had it or FSX since released. I always wondered how bad things must get to drive someone to do this. Renaming the cfg file should always be the first step if you can't solve the problem by conventional (common) means.Of course, the many useful forums are where the questions should be asked. You will get a helpful answer 99% of the time.2. Edit the Direct 3D settings.3. Moving the entire installation may be a little difficult unless you are willing to edit the registry & some cfg files.I'll let someone else address this one.

1> Regarding the black aircraft window, I have not seen this problem myself, but I understand it is commonly due to either a video driver issue (sometimes either upgrading or downgrading the video driver fixes the problem), or an incorrect setting in the video driver settings, usually due to the overlay function. I can't think of anything in FSX that would cause this problem. For instance, for some nVidia boards, users need to downgrade the video driver to see the plane in full screen mode (I might be thinking of FS9). In windowed mode it works fine.Thomas[a href=http://www.flyingscool.com] http://www.flyingscool.com/images/Signature.jpg [/a]I like using VC's :-)N15802 KASH '73 Piper Cherokee Challenger 180
