Does FG coupled with TAA degrade image quality in 1440p?

Featured Replies

The question is clear:

Can you notice Frame generation is on when using TAA? How does it look? Are any screen areas looking worse despite the double frame rate? Speaking about 1440p here, not 4K.

And what about in case of low fps? Let's say you go from 30 fps without FG to 60 fps... Some reviews suggest it works well only in the 100+ fps range. Thank you.

That is what I have gathered after watching this video regarding using "lower" frame rates like 60. Considering you do not need alot of frames to enjoy Flight Sim.. (I usually cap at 45 PFS in MSFS) I'm not sure how Frame Generation would be of that much use for MSFS, where 60 FPS is more than enough.

I use TAA and FG on.  No noticeable degradation at all.  Now DLSS is another story.  That causes the moving glass cockpit gauges to blur.

That’s just it though. As long as you can consistently maintain at least 30, you’ll be displaying 60 or more depending on how you want to set it up. And there’s no artifacting that I can notice using TAA and FG. There’s really no need to use DLSS since even at 1440p your GPU would only be running at around 60% max with frames capped at 60. If I try upping the render resolution to anything beyond 130% then I get some artifacts.

I don't notice any degradation in my case. TAA and Frame Gen on.
But I use upscaling 130% to produce a sharper image which makes it easier to read the instruments.
I've capped my frames to 75 FPS in Nvidia Control Panel, so it's producing 35-37,5 frames in the sim, and then Frame Gen doubles to 75.
I also have G-Sync on, the result is extremely fluid.

The biggest difference between FG on or FG off is that the whole experience is far smoother with FG on, it feels more immersive.

Those are the settings that work best with my hardware (5800X3D / RTX4080), I could go higher but my old G-Sync monitor is a bit scuffed and no longer likes more than 90HZ input..

Well, I've been using the SmartTV frame generation "From the 2010's" he refers to for about 3 year now to double the frames in Flight Sim and Sim Racing games. In flight sim depending on the scenario I set my refresh rate to 23hz or 29hz for 46fps or 58fps respectively and for sim racing I set my refresh rate to 50hz for 100fps on screen. I've never noticed any input lag which would probably matter in Codemasters F1 for example. There are some artifacts in MSFS but I have had a long time to tweak the setup to reduce them to a minimum and they are barely noticeable. To be honest I'm not sure some of the artifacts are not baked into MSFS anyway like ghosting of the landing gear or vertical parallel line mesh appearing in clouds or a light fuzz around aircraft against background. There are none at all in racing games at 50hz. I'd love to see FG on a 4090 with my own eye's to make a comparison but based on what I've read to be honest If I did see a difference I'd suspect it would be negligible.

Some artifacts are likely from the sim, others from the monitor not being able to keep up with the frame rates. I've never seen a vertical line in the clouds, but I've seen a horizontal one, and it's an MSFS problem. Fuzz around the aircraft against the background is a response time / frame time artifact likely caused by the monitor.

Interesting timing on your question. I purchased and installed a 4070ti last night. After a few hiccups I was able to turn on FG, not by UI; that seems broke for now but by turning on FG in the user.cfg.

So far after a couple of hours of flight in various twins and jets it all LOOKS the same, no degradation.  It’s just faster almost doubling what I previously had in my 30 series card.

YMMV, but so far this is mine

Edit:  And yes, I am running 1440p on a i513600k cpu

Looking at a good deal on a 3080 build... Is the 4xxx worth paying up for right now given the DLSS etc. ?

I'd definitely get a 4090 if I were you.  You'll basically double your fps using frame gen
