New to VR.. Anti-Aliasing frustration

Where does 3152 come from?

It's just what OpenXR uses as 100% scaling with the G2, presumably being what upscaling is required over the native render resolution to overcome lens distortion. I believe SteamVR uses a similar resolution for 100%. The important thing in getting clear instruments in DLSS is that you get your render resolution as high as possible, whether that be as a percentage of a base resolution or an absolute resolution, without impacting performance significantly to offset blurriness introduced by DLSS.

I would recommend you to keep Virtual Desktop in GodMode, and SteamVR at 100% to keep things simple. Then play around with the upscale factor in the sim settings.

Did you finally set the sharpening setting to 0% in the sim ? Or was it already there ?

Yes, setting the sharpening to 0% in the sim was the ticket!

When you refer to OpenXR, I'm assuming this is OpenXR Toolkit?

I'm referring to the OpenXR settings popup panel within an MSFS VR session.

Yes, the overlay to make config changes using CTRL+F2?

Got my Pico 4 last week and I've been having a blast, but having come from a sharp, clear 4K flat screen, the image quality in VR hasn't blown me away. I've been tweaking settings to get the most out of my Pico 4 but I've hit a wall with aliasing (I hate aliasing! 😆) System  is a 13900K and 4090.

I have the same System, but an HP G2 and a 1440p monitor, and I have to say that despite the less resolution perceived in the G2 like something between 1080p-720p, for me is really good, smooth and immersive anyway with G2 in 60Hz, TAA 100 and in OpXR Tools 100 too (not Toolkit), no Motion Reprojections nor DLSSs, I do not why, the materials of the VC in VR are more like real textures-materials feelings, despite more definitions-resolution in 2D, they are like cartoons, animated drawings, I don´t know if for the less resolution or other VR advantage, despite the more resolutions of monitors.

I remember some years ago, I went from a 720p TV to a 1080p TV as monitor, and I had the same sensation, yes, more resolution-less sawtooth, though the images were less videoreals-photoreals, it din´t like me.

Absolutely! After a week and a half of twiddling settings, I am pretty happy with the way I've got the Pico 4 dialed in. The displays are incapable of the clarity and vibrance of my 4K monitor, but as you say, there's something about the materials in VR that exhibit a level of realism you just don't get in 2D.

Just try a flight at night with the Pico. It's another aspect I had overlooked for too long.

One of my favorite flights now is to start from Renton Muni next to Seattle at 05:00 local, with the freeware JPL Cessna 152. That plane has a very nice adjustable internal lighting. I have also set a keyboard shortcut (or is it the default one?) for the torchlight, just to see something inside the cockpit prior to turn on the battery and the lights. Once the plane is running and the internal lights are set to my liking, I takeoff facing north and head toward Seattle city center, then I proceed to go to Darrignton Muni. Normally, bu the time I reach there, the sun has come up. The city lights at night in VR are really something I enjoy more than on the normal screen.

Agree too, I was thinking this too these past weeks, with the more clarity and definition nowadays only using TAA, I am beginning to flight (always were day flights for the lack of nitidity and more blurriness of the nights) and enjoy the night flights, with an HP G2 too.

Are you guys seeing really bad banding or almost rainbow like colors on clouds at night in VR?  Must be something in my settings but it doesn't look so good.

VR is still something I just use for very casual flight.  I feel like I'm only getting 1080P in the very center sweet spot with my G2...and outside of that the quality quickly deteriorates.  Because I have to turn down other settings due to the high resolution, simming in VR still feels like late 2000s graphics.  Hopefully in time the headset resolution will increase drastically.

I find it especially hard to read text on some glass cockpits like the ATR or CJ4 while in VR.  I have to lean on to read basic altitude or heading values.  I wonder if these issues exist with the Varjo or Pimax headsets?

Yes, I've seen that before. Wasn't sure if it was a panel or compression issue or something more inherent in MSFS. Like low quality dithering.

I see that also. It's subtle (and not particularly distracting), but definitely present.

Are you also seeing laggy mouse input?  That is my largest pet peeve in VR.  Sometimes it's fine but then randomly my mouse lags really bad  so it's hard to get to a knob or button.

Hey Ryan, I did respond to this a couple of days ago, but my post got tu4fed when Avsim had to do a restore from backup. Anyway, yes I have occasionally seen this laggy mousevthing, but mostly in setup screens, not the VC. Any ideas of the cause? I was wondering if it's actually a SteamVR thing because a few times when it was happening, when I stepped out of VR back to SteamVR, the steam page was all flickery.
