Flying to Iceland..... intresting routing.

Hiya,Saw this problem in the Just Flight forum, and was so amused I thought I'd share it.Ever tried using FSX to plot a high alt route to Iceland? "Finding Route from Boston (KBOS) to Kelfavik (BIKF). This could take some time..."It sure could. via Alaska, over Greenland to the Orkney's (flying all the way past Iceland in the process), and then on to Iceland.Bravo!Wonder if it is unsure about NAT's and ETOPS?But even then, why fly from Greenland to Scotland right past Iceland.

Flight Sim's flight planner uses high altitude airways.There are none across the North Atlantic, none between the US and Iceland - so the FP can't select airways which don't exist.At least FSX is working the same as FS2004. In FS2002 flights between the US and Europe would be routed via a VOR in Tunisia.Many of us have been lobbying MS to put a few 'representative' NAT tracks and tracks to/ from Iceland in the next version of FS.That will upset the purist who want daily variations in the NAT, but would at least make the Flight Planner function usable.

The simplest approach is to enter the departure and destination codes to generate a direct routing, then drag the course line on the map to simulate NAT tracks... ;)

Ha, ha, ha, that is a pretty funny routing. At least you'd get to see more scenery. Best to set the fuel to Unlimited! Still, Bill is right. Human input trumps computer GI/GO operations in this case, and some creatively-placed waypoints would solve the problem. Be thankful that the MS Flight Planner is flexible enough to allow for custom waypoints.Jeff ShylukSenior Staff Reviewer, Avsim
