My Average FPS Have Dropped By More Than Half This Morning

Featured Replies

Fired up the sim and went to replay a flight I had started last night. Plane was the Dreamliner, Airport is MIA and destination is PDX.  Last night sitting on RWY in VC average FPS 70-80, external maybe 10 FPS more.  In flight I often see frames over 120-140+.  This has been consistent for me using Frame Insertion with my 4070Ti.

This morning FPS has cratered to 30 or less on RWY as well as huge stutters. I’ve rebooted a few times, have changed planes and scenarios but to no avail.  Frames are still in the tank. I saw a similar discussion a week or so ago but didn’t pay attention because my frames were and remained 100+ in almost every situation. Now this?

ANYONE ELSE?

Please and Thank You for any feedback or suggestions -B

Check that your sim is in DX12 and not DX11. I heard some saying that it had reverted to DX11 when they went to check.

Thanks Alvega, after reading your post I went and checked my settings and it seemed they had reverted to DLSS.  Also a lot of other settings seemed to have reverted also and my LODs had gone to 150 each.  I have been running at 100/100/40, so after I put it all back and rebooted I expected it all to be back to normal but instead it seemed worse!  I then went into Dev mode and turned on the FPS counter and my Main Thread has crashed.  Usually in the green at 90% now its about 12%? (see image).

I'm lost and tempted to do a full reinstall but I hope calmer and saner heads can steer me in a better direction.

Check your CPU's function with some sort of bench/stress test and see if it's holding it's own.  The change is so severe one wonders if it's throttling.

Before the nuclear option try these simple actions if you haven't already:

  • Use Windows Disk Cleanup to clear out DirectX Shader Cache
  • If you are using photogrammetry, delete the current Rolling Cache, and rebuild it.
    • If not using PG, simply turn off the RC if it's on
  • Update to the current NV driver if you're using NV GPU.  Use their Clean Install option.  And repeat it even if it's the same driver you have installed.

Well no soap for me. In trying to repair (Windows Restore Point) my OS drive took a powder and I had to go to image (4/27/2023 backup).

After restoring OS from backup I started MSFS and it kind of started but then demanded a restart and after that it too went south. I uninstalled and reinstalling has been nothing short of traumatic. It keeps trying to install to C:\ and I keep redirecting it to my default install of G:\MSFS2020.

I actually had it installed and running but after rejoining the beta it wants to install the AAU2 to a new install on C.  With that I’m throwing up my hands for the night and will try again tomorrow.  Thanks for all the help. It was useful and valid, just didn’t fix it.

Looks like frame generation is not working (4070). When working it doubles the FPS.

Same here. In DX12 with a 4090 I am now seeing 40fps instead of the normal 90-100fps 😬

So this is saying that you can’t repath the core software?  That certainly seems to be the case now but it wasn’t always as I have had mine installed on G:\MSFS2020 since I purchased on release day.

Thanks for the info TM, it very well be a solution as my previously 1TB C drive is now 2TB and it can accommodate 2GB with ease but It would prefer not to install on my boot drive.

Thanks again,

no, you simply edit the usercfg.opt file, last line, to point to any location you like. has always been like this and still is. Only the small launcher app gets installed to  drive C

as in that Zendesk article:

UPDATE THE USERCFG FILE

Make sure that the UserCFG file points to the correct installation folder.

  1. Find the folder where your Official and Community packages are installed (for example D:\MSFS)
  2. Close Microsoft Flight Simulator
  3. Navigate to your UserCfg.opt file
  4. Open the UserCFG.opt file with Notepad
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and delete the last line (for instance:)
    • InstalledPackagesPath "C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages")
  6. Copy-paste the path to the folder where your packages are installed OR Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator. You'll be prompted to choose the installation path.
  7. Click "Install Package Path" and select the folder where your packages are installed.

Install the launcher/app

The Microsoft Flight Simulator launcher (Approx 1.3GB) will install in the default games and apps installation folder

MOVING THE PACKAGES INSTALLATION FOLDER TO A NEW DRIVE

After moving the packages installation folder to a new drive, update the UserCfg.opt file. Failure to do so will result in having to redownload the packages every time you launch the simulation.

Yes TM that is what I did this time and it appears to be working. But it was not always that way because before this incident I ALWAYS had the launcher (2GB) installed on G:\MSFS2020.

That said, it just finished install after I pointed the installer app (c:\XboxGames) to G:\MSFS2020 where my packages are installed. It saw them and continued loading WU13 without fuss.  So far so good, now to rejoin the beta!

Thanks again,

Why treat it like the sky is falling?  I had this happen this morning, even though cold booting my system and heading directly into MSFS. It got worse as I approached a payware airport, KOMA, and really had me in freeze frame during taxi after heroicly landing.   Among other violations I had done some web research during the early stages of that flight and my browser was still open.

I have flown once or twice daily for the past week with no such preceding flight issues.  I perservered through this flight after checking my settings.  Cold booted and started MSFS again. Positioned myself at the same KOMA and taxiied around as smooth as butter.  I suspect a server issue was the fault.

Hello all. Well the journey has ended and it was successful but surely not fun. But during the trip I learned some new things and thanks to TM my 2GB of loader data is now safely on my C:\XboxGames where it will be routinely backed up.  The other 146GB or so of data (packages) remain safely in my G:\MSFS2020 folder, and because of that and the fact MSFS2020 didn’t have to download all the packages my reinstall once correctly started took all of 30 min as opposed to 10+ hours which had been my previous experiences.  BONUS!

Thanks to all who helped, now back to flying.  As an FYI my 120+ frames are all back.  BONUS BONUS!
