Your graphics card has encountered an error.

Recommended Posts

I know that there are myriad similar threads, and I wish one was "stickied" to the top so we could all report any similar issues, clues and updates, but here is my input.

I only recently began to have this issue - the last couple of months - and it is completely and utterly random. I can fly for three hours solid, and nothing. A good flight, a satisfying landing, and shut down MSFS properly. Another day, I can be ten minutes into a flight and this problem occurs. None of the monitoring software I run is reporting excessive GPU card temps - 70 degrees tops - and the dev debug tells me that my 3080 is using 5gb out of 9gb of my GPU's memory, and my CPU is using about 4-5gb of RAM. I've not overclocked the CPU or the GPU, so unless either were clocked by the system manufacturer, that can't be the issue. I've tried running the sim in potato mode as well as ramping it up to ultra, but as it's such a random occurrence, I can't confirm that this is having any effect. I've turned LODs right down and turned them up. Traffic on, traffic off. Flying a Cessna or an Airbus. Over cities, countryside, mountains, sea. I've found nothing that will consistently induce this failure. Even on the highest settings, I sometimes just get a slow frame rate and no CTD. It's random and, consequently, frustrating. I've rolled back my GPU drivers, kept them up to date, and in the last couple of weeks - for a different reason - I did a fresh install of Windows. Nothing helps, or seems to make it any worse. My GPU doesn't fail on any other game I've ran, so this appears to be a MSFS issue. I suspect that this is going to be a very difficult issue for Asobo to iron out, because we're all running different systems, with different add-ons and different mods. It could be something as pernicious as some of us having the PC12 add-on together with the London City Airport scenery, or some other random permutation, and Asobo would never be able to uncover it. I don't know, perhaps others can identify exactly what drives their sim to crash, but I can't. Yesterday, I flew four 90 minute flights one after the other. Today, I flew for an hour from Peterborough to Belfast, and the error was flung up in my face as I was rolling down the runway after landing.

Almost makes me want to return to X-plane 11! FFS.

My most recent occurrence was in the Main Menu which I returned to after completing a 60-minute flight in the C414aw at High and Ultra settings on a 4K monitor with about 50 addons loaded.  Had a great flight with fps at a steady 30.  GPU temp stayed below 75°C the entire time.

Then while in the Main Menu trying to decide if I wanted to quit or start another flight - CTD with the graphics error

It really is random - has happened to me off and on since last September with four different NVidia drivers, a 48" 4K Monitor and a 32" HD monitor.  I flew about 40-hours in Ultra and High with no problems and the same driver.  Now I've had four CTD with the graphics error in the last 10-hours of flight time with no changes to my system other than moving from Win 10 to Win 11.  GPU temp, utilization, driver seem to have no impact on when the error occurs.

But - at least for me, the graphics error is just a minor annoyance and certainly not worth my trying to "fix it" - I just reboot Windows (don't know why I do that!) and go fly again with seldom a follow on error.

Something to consider with nVidia drivers is that there are now 2 flavors - standard and DCH architecture.

I found that after installing the DCH version over a standard one wirhout doing a clean install I got the error.  A clean DCH version install with the latest driver fixed the issue.

Older versions of Nvidia driver do not show this error message on my system. New versions of Nvidia drivers do show this error on my system (your graphics card has encountered an error).

On my system:

The latest driver that never shows the error is: 5.31.29

For instance 5.31.41 shows this error often in MSFS, most every flight.

Ryzen5 5600X, RTX3070, 600 Watt Gold, Dell S3222DGM 32" curved 1440p VA, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB M.2. NVMe...Warthog HOTAS, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels (multi, switch, radio), StreamDeck, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel.

Currently 531.79 DCH after clean install no error.  3060TI

531.41 gave me the error also.

I have said this in earlier threads on this topic: from all the evidence, this is a problem traceable to SU12. I and many others never saw it before SU12 but now see it frequently. Changing drivers may help for some MSFS users, but not others; for instance I have it with 531.29 and every other driver I've tried. It will take Asobo to fix this, and I hope that will happen soon.
