Odd. They did mention a ten year road map or something similar. If it means that my freeware and payware scenery, planes and other addons (pilot2atc, fsrealistic, fs2crew RAAS) etc still work in the new sim then so be it.

It better not be the price of a AAA title when we already paid for the premium deluxe version. That really annoys me, actually. If anything, premium and premium deluxe users better get a hefty discount. We might riot.

We're already getting discounts for life. Let's not be too greedy now lol. But if we do get 2024 at a discount, you'll hear no complaints from me 🙂

I already paid for the super duper cray cray deluxe version about less than 3 years ago. I don't want to buy another simulator. I am tired of buying simulators every few years because of things. I realize that I am complaining but.....

MSFS 2020 was presented with a ten year life cycle, or whatever you call it, and therefore I disagree.

I realize that our addons should all work with this new simulator but still....offensive initials not allowed, Asobo. Just update the current simulator to what it should be.

There are still bugs since release in 2020. Each sim update brings more bugs. A little annoyed here.

By the way: the only discount that applied to me was the ATR. Which I really like.

Then don't. They already said they will continue to support 2020.

i really don't get what the end game is for MS to be doing this? If they keep Asobo as the studio for both, the updates will grow ever longer and bug fixes will take even longer than they do now unless they grow their staffing. I am confused as to why they will continue to support MSFS2020 when they release the new sim. It's good that it sounds like everything in MSFS2020 will work in MS2024 so why continue with both as separate platforms / products? Very odd. And what will dev's do now? Say PMDG releases a plane, do they release on the MS2020 platform and make you buy a separate copy for MS2024? I for one have no plans on keeping up with two separate platforms. If all my stuff will work in MS2024 and it has all the bells and whistles then that is the obvious choice. Is MS/Asobo only going to put long requested items just in the new MS2024, ala, seasons? Their trailer shows it working in that title but we have yet to see a date for when it will be in MS2020. What a confusing time.....

That is kinda how it goes, for a short time.  I can't imagine why they would continue updating MSFS 2020, however, I suspect, MSFS 2024 will be the same with some enhancements.  Missions, seasons, and maybe some other improvements.  They know that eventually all MSFS2020 users will adopt.  IOW, we will roll out cross-compatible fixes, but any overhauls will only be in the new sim.  Major weather change?  Must use 2024.  Seasons?  2024.  Adjustments to runway lights being too bright at night?  Okay, 2020 and 2024.

One gotcha would be weather radar and historical weather.  I could see that only be accessible with 2024 and developers charging just to implement it into a "new" plane that we already own in 2020.  We have a lot of unknowns to contend with, and I don't think we'll have answers until those 3rd party products are announced for 2024.  I do think the sim will be almost the same as 2020, but many improvements won't come to 2020.  I could also see the replay feature only being a 2024 exclusive item.  If you remember previous versions, FS2002 was visually bland and FS2004 (FS9) had a lot of terrain changes, sky color and cloud changes, improvements to AI and ATC, and more.  On the surface, the sim looked a lot better but was essentially the same. Lots of little gotchas happen with new versions.  I'm interested, naturally, but I literally just jumped into MSFS 4 months ago, so I'm not looking to spend money on anything that isn't awe-inspiring.

You might, but don’t speak for the rest of us.

The current gen of Flightsim has been the best value for money I have had in a software purchase (commercial or gaming). why wouldn’t they charge full price for the next installment?

They get around this by only giving you pay-to-play improvements, which is the same model used in almost every product out there.  Want CarPlay or ApplePlay in the car you bought 10 months ago?  Sorry, you gotta buy a new car for that.  I was given the impression ApplePlay would come to my Mazda CX-5 and that never happened.  It wasn't until the next model that it was available.  It was a lease car and I just returned it rather than buying it out.  Same for my MacBook Pro.  The latest MacOS won't run on my model.  I'd have to fork out for a new model to run the latest MacOS.  I rarely use it, so it's moot, but that's the idea.  Google was much worse in my opinion for OS updates.  A new phone would get like one major OS upgrade then no more.

Modern software companies are the worst for milking their users.  MS/Asobo have given us a lot, but I'm of the mindset that if you aren't gonna fix the bugs, then I'm less than overjoyed. What always happens in these cases is bug fixes come at a price, which will be MSFS2024.  As always, I hope I'm wrong.

Hi,

I am not surprised at all and frankly it was to be expected. Flight Simulator is becoming a franchise again just like Forza Motorsport and Call of Duty.

Since it also has a great share of market on the Xbox, it has to be seen like any other AAA.

4 years is not that bad, it may be 2 years in the future…like in the old days.

100% it'll just be part of the continual update process, i.e live service that the sim is.

You might want to downgrade that from 100%…to 0%, lol.

It’s a new sim version, so you’re paying for this.

You mustn't have been around at the time of MSFS2002 and MSFS2004.

You can literally change the whole engine aorund the add-ons and the addons will still work.

I think many of the folks who responded to the announcement of MSFS 2024 as too short a gap probably started flight simming with FSX and never used Prepar3d. 2-3 year gap between releases that maintained backwards compatibility while implementing new features was the norm. Heck, I had sceneries released for FSX that still worked in Prepar3d V5 that at most required a 2 minute edit in Airport Design Editor or a quick bgl convert in Model Converter X.  I'm just happy that they've established backwards compatibility going forward. It will be interesting to see what new features they will add to the sim that scenery and aircraft developers can utilize in their projects. I'm excited.

Side note, it reminds of back when it was Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98SE , 2000, ME, XP and then this 5 year gap until 7 and we got back into the rhythm with 8, 8.1, 10 and a 5-6 year gap again until Windows 11 in 2021 and 12 coming up according to schedule around 2024 as well. Seems like a Microsoft thing.

For me it is only interesting if I get improved scenery and weather. I am not into missions. I plan my own flights….

Wouldn't believe anything to come out of them to be honest. How much support, time ,resources will they  even provide for something old , when there is a new product ? . It's only common sense . Basically they will sweep all the existing old bugs( and yes there is still a ton of it) and eyesores under the carpet, as the new sim will take all the attention.

Bugs & issues that remain from the first to the second would be terrible, the very fact the horizon line bug is clearly visible in the trailer coupled with their history does not fill me with much confidence.

This is great news. I'm moving to Kiribati

Nope. Bad news as it means they won’t focus fs24 on improving much the sim core which would then require updates to addons  e.g. water physics, ground traction, air dynamics, etc.

History shows that progress in flight simulation means some compatibility breaking. If there is none, there is no progress. At the end of the day, we have to choose.

In what I’ve read so far, they are just cranking out content, they pimp out FS20 and call it a new sim 😇
