How can you possibly know that?

If you have ever made textures, then you should know for which engine they will be compiled.

That doesn't answer my question.

But nothing says the engine updates have changed the texture format.

Asobo have said most addons will work in 2024 with no issue, so the textures could not have changed. Or there’s legacy support for 2020 textures.

I do not know for sure. But I assume that the transition to a new engine cannot be done as part of a simple update. This is the heart of the simulator. But I know that different engines require their own texture build. Perhaps there will be support for old textures without new effects.

Unless for some reason MSFS would stop adhering to the WIC supported formats (Like majority of game engines), I don't see what @Flying-Hare said has any bearing. So I am really curious the source of their statement.

What makes you think there's a "new" engine? It's an updated one, like in a sim update, and that's it most likely. Otherwise they surely wouldn't have said 99% of the addons will be compatible.

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

So you don't really know, just speculating with no real reason to think so. Majority of engines support the commonly used texture formats.

Isn't this stated explicitly in the announcement: "Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is powered by the significantly evolved Asobo Studio engine."

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

It isn’t a new engine, it’s an updated version of the current engine

Even if you would take that literally, it only confirms my point. "Evolved", not "brand-new". In normal words this likely means added engine features that are too complex to add in simple sim updates (or too "valuable"...), like moving objects etc. Even with all the post-editing in the trailer the engine looks very familiar to MSFS 2020.

It seems some people have access to information the rest of us don't have. Going by stuff being said here, it looks like it has been confirmed that 2024 immediately dumbs down the flight model as soon as the player decides to do one of the career tasks. Crop dusting? It makes use of ace combat physics. Helicopter rescue? That's when they employ the Grand Theft Auto flight model! I mean, these activities are "arcade", right? Right?

Then there really won't be any problems. If there is a single marketplace, I will be happy, because I have invested a lot of money there. The usual excitement

It's not a new engine though, you seem to be basing your texture theory on absolutely nothing.

When I compiled textures, I was usually asked for which engine. That's why I thought there was a difference.)
