Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 - Announce Trailer

Am I the only one wondering if this is all semantics?

"Sequel" could literally be a marketing term which basically means the sim has a big update w/ mostly the same software, but is being re-branded for new sales.

Also, the twitter account saying, "Yep! It's a brand new sequel!" is probably run by people who respond to questions about every game they've got and basically just have stock responses. I'm guessing their main goal is to "be positive and excited!" but not really go into details as they probably don't know squat about most of the software they have to communicate about.

I think you’re right and I also think this is a marketing balls up of the ‘left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing’ variety.

This is obviously Georg’s ‘surprise’ but why on earth launch this out of the blue on a Sunday with no follow up detail? I really wonder if this was originally scheduled to be announced at the upcoming Expo but someone, somewhere has jumped the gun?

As it is, they’ve just killed the 3rd party add-on market; at least until there’s clarification of offensive initials not allowed is going on…

Isn't a case of much ado for nothing ? Whats is new ? We see now what we have always seen over the decades.

A few years after  release, when sales plummet, MS announces a new version with big hooplas and too good to be entirely believed novelties (hint : this is called marketing). They need  to generate new sales on a large scale. Nothing wrong.  MS is not a charity, is it ? And  they were honestly quite generous with  FS20 with all the updates.

It is highly probable that this version will be mostly compatible with its predecessor, as usual. Now, do we want a 100% backward compatibility ? I don't . An example, if FS24 brings about a new ground traction and forces updating all our aircraft, I would applaud the move.

cash grab. the shareholders need betterROI  so they will make this either a new game or paid update to 2020.

You can have backwards compatibility and STILL require an update for 3PDs.  That's what I hope for.  We still want things to be more SDK native to the sim.  WX radar is one example.  This would give us better performance in 3rd party add-ons.

It's a new product, not a major paid DLC update.

I think for us, it will be just merely 'upgrading' to the latest version, for a fee, so to speak.

Dramatic.  This is no different than the update from FS2002 to 2004 (FS9).

I am surprised they just dropped this in the middle of the Xbox showcase with no further information beyond the trailer. So many questions.

I would be amazed if current addons didn't transfer over and as long as they do I can't wait!

Nope.

I thought that but ive just seen a bit of text that describes 'Asobos new engine'

Whatever the thoughts on this, it can only be another positive step for flight simulation.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Maybe it's referring to the new seasons?  I guess there was a tornado that honestly looked fairly realistic.  But the atmosphere and lighting looked the same.

I'm not sure that it is. If the release cycle is faster (and prioritized over) the quality of each sim then we're never going to get the product we actually want.

A "brand-new simulator" with "the significantly evolved Asobo Studio engine" according the announcement. Now what that means for backward compatibility is anyone's guess at this point...

Yup, agree.  I think their engine is just getting enhanced, which is good.
