ATR a nightmare to keep on the runway during landing

Featured Replies

I am really enjoying the Asobo ATR, but one thing that I have having really problems with is trying to keep the aircraft on the runway when there is a crosswind, it does not even have to be a strong crosswind, still a nightmare. It feels like the rudder is not doing anything until I slow below 30kts. It is kind of the same taking off in a crosswind too. I have noticed it has gotten worst since the last ATR update. I have notice watching some streamers they have also had the same struggle.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem or is this a general bug with the aircraft?

Cheers

Marcus H

I personally have no problem with controlling ATR on the ground before or after patch. I know MSFS ground friction model is far from perfect, but if you have rudder peddls and can tweak sensitivity it fairy manageable. Remember - crosswind calls for aileron into the wind. You can see crosswind is also struggle IRL below

I have had no significant problems controlling the ATR in crosswinds.

One important proviso. You cannot control an aircraft in a crosswind (in either a simulated or real aircraft) using rudder alone. You absolutely must use aileron as well, and the interaction between rudder and aileron will change as the aircraft velocity changes during takeoff or landing.

The somewhat wonky MSFS ground friction model does complicate things, but in general it is definitely possible to maintain the centerline in a crosswind in the ATR or any other MSFS aircraft. It does take practice.

If you are “doing it right” you will find yourself using upwind aileron and downwind rudder. I.e. with a right crosswind, you will use right aileron and left rudder.

It is essential that you do not use any “assists” in MSFS on either the roll or yaw axes - most especially do not use “auto rudder”.

It is also important to use hardware with as much precision as possible. It will be much easier to execute precisely with a good quality yoke and set of rudder pedals, than with something like an XBox controller

HI JR

Would it be possible to see your sensitivity settings for the ATR?

Thanks
