Is the Kodiak 100 still the best STOL choice?

Featured Replies

Last Sept/Oct when I was active here, the Kodiak 100 by SimWorks was highly regarded, but having some teething pains with flight modelling. I bought it and used it, but it did have some odd behaviour. SimWorks was blaming sim changes but still tweaking things, and seemed pretty responsive.

But I see the last update was Dec.

Are all the issues fixed? Is it still a fan favourite? Or has it been eclipsed by something better or fallen out of favour? What’s the state of the Kodiak 100 these days?

There was a bigger update including changes to flight model, ITT behavior and other things back in early December last year. You should def give it a try again. If its the best STOL choice depends a lot on what you want to do, how many pax to take and how fast you wanna fly. For the amount of pax it's a good one yes. But it can't compete with the Porter regarding STOL. Islander another nice STOL but piston. Both way slower though.

Has any work been done on the 208B Caravan?  Any mods for that? At least back in the day, It’s flight model was always considrred a bit dumbed down.

They're working on the Kodiak 900 which is bigger and faster that the 100.

Black Square – Steam Gauge Overhaul – Analog Caravan.

Black Square’s Analog Caravan brings you a completely new interior and panel for the default MSFS Grand Caravan, featuring analog instrumentation (steam gauges), swappable radio configurations and an overhauled electrical system with every circuit breaker, bus, meter, switch, and knob functioning. Users will find increased detail on the instrument panel and electrical panels when compared to default aircraft, and a similar level of detail in the cabin.

Thanks... yeah I understand that's a nice plane but I prefer glass cockpits.

These are simple STOL planes, not necessarily the best.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

The Freedom fox is probably the best light STOL platform.  For a workhorse, the Milviz Porter is the best around.  Never flew the Kodiak again once I picked up the Porter.  One of the nicest flight models in the sim (before A2A raised the bar haha), unbelievable STOL capability, choice of full G1000 or analog gauges... And the third wheel is in the correct place.  What's not to love?  ;)

It's nice to watch the STOL championships from Alaska on Youtube. They measure the length of the plane. Some landings are done in less feet the length of the plane! Of course these little Cubs etc. are modified and they are usually holding the contest where you can be landing into a stiff wind.
