Careful with a desktop.ini on your desktop

After using Acceleration for a while I noticed this file on my desktop called desktop.iniI though that maybe I had misplaced it there or something and 'returned' it to my main drive partition.Then I had a big big drop in performance in FSXAfter tweaking every slider in town, I returned this file to the desktop and the great performance of yore returned.BE CAREFUL with it, and... what is it? allen

In XP, desktop.ini is just used in folder configuration settings. Most are found in documents and settings folders for storage on user options. Sharing, Icon info, CLSID, and other similar settings. Most of mine only have a CLSID in them, or they're empty. Desktop.ini files are meant to be hidden files, so unless you have your folders options set to display hidden files, you shouldn't see them. I kinda think I had a Desktop.ini file on my last XP build, but I had show all files (e.g., hidden, system) turned on and I still never saw the desktop.ini file on my actual desktop.If you're running Vista, then perhaps something changed in that area of displaying files. Either way, I fail to see how that file could effect performance in any game. It's possible MS is storing some minor settings in that file and FSX can't find it. Look inside and see what's in there to find out. You can't hurt it as long as you don't edit it, but you can open it and view it with Notepad since .ini's have always been regular text files. AFAIK, desktop.ini files will just recreate themselves if deleted, but I've never messed with them.

I found these details out after, but FSX ran better after I put it back, probably was not related. There was a point where i was getting 2 fps on approach with my quadcore..... after returning said file to its original position >>> back up to 20 fps on approach. Like I said, probably not the reason why it got back to regular performance.I have 2 computers and was exchanging some data via a home router network is probably why its there.I also have a partition with XP on my SATA for use with apps needing hardware with no Vista32 drivers yet (music creation stuff).allen
