Finally upgrading to FSX

Recommended Posts

I am finally going to take the big leap and upgrade to FSX after more than 3,000 hours on FS9. Of course I am going to a new and better machine at the same time. I do want to switch to Vista, and was thinking of vista Home Premium. I have noticed from lurking a bit here recently that many of you have Vista and many have XP. My question is: Will Vista slow me down too much, or should I go with it? My new machine will haveCore 2 duo, 3Ghz; 4GB DDR2 800 SDRAM500GB SATA 7200RPM HDNvidia GForce 8800 GTX Video cardCH USB Yoke and ruddersAdvice appreciated!Richard

You should be perfectly fine with that system running under Vista. I would recommend you add Acceleration (includes SP2) if you can afford it as it will increase the performance under DX9. If not you can wait for the downloadable release of SP2. There are issues atm with DX10 for alot of users though.

With FSX SP1, Vista has been measured to be 10-15% slower than XP on exactly the same hardware. But XP doesn't support DX10, for which a taste test is provided in FSX SP2.Gary

Save yourself some major $ and get the 8800GT.Small performance drop from the GTX but better than the GTS.All for ~$270Glenn

And go with Vista 64bit because 32bit can't address all 4gb of your system memory.

I don't think there would be any performance drop. GT is a much better buy indeed.

I was told that as of yesterday, Microsoft is no longer marketing XP. In a few years, they will no longer support it.Richard

Hm that's interesting reading. Usually the PDMG guys do things right and know their tech stuff. However I noticed 1) they didn't mention whether or not they frame locked, for one thing;and 2) I wonder how well-leaned the Vista installs were; But again, I have faith and confidence in the PDMG guys on this, because as I said they generally know their P's and Q's.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian
