I checked out a few Canadian PG cities: Halifax looks much improved as does Toronto, Calgary is still looking a bit rough.

when I purchased MSFS yesterday

I was going to say ,I didn’t think you were a MSFS user Christopher. Welcome aboard !

I’m very confident you’ll love it, it’s come a long way, I initially wasn’t impressed and was about to delete it last December having not used it for months.
Just before I deleted it I thought I’d just have one last go and I was absolutely blown away with what I saw and I’ve been addicted ever since.

Talking of download speeds, I am currently downloading the two World updates (XIV and XV) that were not automatically installed when I purchased MSFS yesterday. The download speeds are varying wildly from 2Mbps to over 60. I assume this is some kind of "bandwidth sharing", but with the high speed connection being passed around between all users?

This is a busy time, with WU 15 just out... Give it a couple of days and you will see things go back to a more acceptable level.. 🙂

No world updates are auto installed. I'm guessing so you can pick and choose what you want and not forced to install things you don't want.

Welcome to the 'Dark Side'!

As pointed out, World Updates need to be obtained through the in-sim Marketplace. That way, you can leave the parts of the World that don't interest you uninstalled (e.g. the City Updates or World Update 1-Japan)
Unfortunately, without rhyme or reason, you can be merrily downloading at 100 Mbps, then slowly drop to 0.05 Mbps, then back up againit is frustrating.

Final point:
Look into the abundant freeware that is available before making purchases (taking care to only install those mods that have either been recently updated or confirmed as working).

AMD Ryzen 5800X3D; MSI RTX 3080 Ti ; 32GB Corsair 3200 MHz; ASUS VG35VQ 35" (3440 x 1440)
Fulcrum One yoke; Thrustmaster TCA Captain Pack Airbus edition; MFG Crosswind rudder pedals; miniCockpit FCU; CPFlight MCP 737; Logitech FIP x3; TrackIR

As you are getting yourself organized, also take the time to install and get familiar with the freeware AddonsLinker.. it will become your friend  🙂

Yes, the UI indicated that I "owned" the other world updates, which made me think that they were already installed. The fact that the city updates were classed as "owned" after I installed them did not help matters!! I left quite a few to download after I had gone to bed last night, but I woke up at 1 AM to a message on the screen (with about 50% of the packages downloaded) that stated "your marketplace session has expired". I do not know if that was a connection issue, or whether they just don't like me

I will try again tonight, and install them one by one.

My primary reason for purchasing MSFS at this time is to return to the world of beta testing. I have been in the wilderness in that regard for the past three years, and I want to get involved again. You know, feel part of a team that is doing something productive. That being the case, I will probably not be installing anything other than the official updates (and any products that need to be beta tested). That may be useful as a baseline indicator for the relevant developers.

If you have a VPN, you can try using that and trying out different VPN regions.

Also, you finally bought MSFS? Wow, you were lurking in this MSFS forum for the longest time without owning it. I thought you would not buy MSFS until MSFS 2024.  Congratz on your purchase of MSFS finally!

MSFS is less about learning the flows on every airbus and more about scud running VFR at treetop level dodging squalls of rain trying to spot the runway.

Anyone know if Orbx Iceland mesh is compatible with WUXV?

Sounds promising David.  Is the SU14 beta really that good?  Could you expand a bit on your comment as it has whetted my appetite.

The first big improvement I noticed in the SU14 beta was the superior implementation of DX12. Before SU14, I always ran MSFS in DX11 because DX12 gave me graphics anomalies and stutters. I was very pleased with the sim in DX11. I'd always locked my fps at 60. But I couldn't employ Frame Generation on my graphics card in DX11. With SU14, however, the sim runs perfectly in DX12 on my system, and I can enable Frame Generation as well. MSFS now runs perfectly smoothly even under the most-demanding scenarios: Everything on 4K Ultra, highly complex airports, payware aircraft, thick cloud cover, etc. The SU14 beta provides the best performance I've ever experienced in my 40 years of flight simming. There's nothing else remotely close.

Additionally, the already-gorgeous world scenery now looks even more realistic in SU14. I believe there was a modest change in the color palette. As someone else said, I can't quite put my finger on it, but everything just looks better.

Asobo has stated that MS2024 will bring up to a 400% performance increase for many users through better utilization of multi-core programming. This additional performance boost will be jaw-dropping. Even now, I can run MSFS at 4K Ultra and drag a window from YouTube TV onto the cockpit panel without missing a beat -- definitely against FAA regs. 🙂

I don't think the Orbx Iceland Mesh is necessary anymore.   I disabled it and did quite a bit of flying around and the terrain quality looked really good to me.

I also had the STsimulations BIAR Akureyri and I think the ASOBO handcrafted looks as good or better and it adds some interiors to the airport so I disabled the payware version as well.

Nothing wrong with that, but are you not tempted to take a nice personal aircraft for a cross country flight?  Even airline captains often own or lease a hobby plane.. a Stearman, a Beaver, or a Husky for flying on weekends..

MSFS has much to offer in that regard.. 😉
