Gamereactor interview with Jorg Neumann

Recommended Posts

Here's the issue I have with certain people. They prefer a particular sim that.....let's just say isn't the prettiest one on the market and as a result, (because only their favorite sim can be the best, apparently) become resentful of MSFS for excelling in the graphical department. They then make it seem like good graphics indicate reduced fidelity and authenticity and anyone who appreciates a good looking sim is a filthy casual who only cares about graphics. The hilarious thing is that you see these same people rejoicing when their favorite sim gets better looking clouds or better looking lighting etc. We do recognize people who genuinely want MSFS to get better and are very vocal with their concerns but people like what I described above are easily recognizable and one of them is in this thread......

Yes because of course rendering pebbles is the ONLY thing they're working on for MS2024, right?

I can guarantee the ATC will not be touched in 2024 and if so, slightly. Mark my words, take a screenshot of this and let's re-connect next year. 😉

Well, if this delivers even half as good as it promises, a lot of people won't care about default ATC.
Alternatively, if it is as good as it promises, MS might buy out the developer and integrate it into the sim as the new default.

Done and since Asobo bothered to touch ATC in the SU14 beta already, I called the screenshot, "To laugh at later" lol

Looking forward to it. Also, to clarify when I said touch, I meant major overhaul of the entire ATC engine so that it is up to the standard of what we all expect and not Mickey Mouse rendition of it that we have in 2020.

FWIW, this is the only bit they've divulged so far about potential ATC improvements/rework in MSFS 2024 after their FSExpo presentation:

https://msfsaddons.com/2023/06/25/exclusive-interview-with-jorg-neumann-and-sebastian-wloch-we-are-in-the-pursuit-of-the-perfect-sim/

Vasco: Talking about other future features, like, for example, improvements to the ATC. You didn’t mention anything about that.

Jorg: We did not.

Vasco: You did not (laughs). Is there anything planned?

Jorg: Maybe. Maybe so. We only talked about a fraction of what we are making. But, you know, to some degree this is going to be the fun we’ll have over the next year, talking about all the other things we haven’t talked about. We heard everybody and we’re paying a lot of attention to the people and what they want. There’s lots of positive news coming.

They do try their darndest (bless their hearts) to push this "either/or" narrative, and I think because that's what they've been used to with legacy sims, and also what a certain lead of a certain sim tries to parrot and portray MSFS as (unsurprisingly). Everyone certainly has different likes/needs/dislikes in a sim and any particular missing feature(s) or existing issue(s) can be a dealbreaker, but for those of us who want great world depiction graphics *and* high fidelity flight *and* high fidelity avionics *and* so on?... with little or no compromises in any of those areas?, without needing a tonne of add-ons?... MSFS 🙂. To try and cast MSFS as only being good at visuals and arcade-gamey makes one look exceedingly foolish as MSFS and its ecosystem marches ahead, an ecosystem full of 3rd party devs who really know the score and are exclusively/mostly focusing on MSFS.

To be fair, there's not a flight sim out there that has advanced default ATC that you're hoping for. It's an incredibly difficult hurdle to get over and if there's any hope to finally having decent default ATC implementation, I'm putting my money on Asobo and their quite hefty bag of resources and...money. I think 2024 is going to be a huge jump and have amazing tech because Microsoft can go into this version knowing they have a successful franchise. Look at the amount of hiring Asobo is doing. What a time to have a hobby where we pretend to fly planes in a world that very closely mimics the real thing.

That’s my understanding. Certainly when I last used XP(11), it had no idea of elevation and seemed to delight in vectoring me into terrain. Maybe they’ve improved that part, but there are so many niggles with ATC in any sim, I’m really not sure it’s something anyone can use to beat others over the head with in their daft sim wars.

I wouldn't count on Asobo changing too much for MSFS2024 as it appears they're struggling to fill the ATC position (amongst others), it's been advertised since late June and I'm pretty sure it was up long before that;

They're searching for a unicorn candidate with that job spec. Need to redefine it as a pure coder role and hire in an ATCO as a part-time contractor to provide technical knowledge support.

It seems they are looking for a “New Working Title” to work on the ATC. At least it shows they want to improve that feature.

I think they already have coders and consultants working together on that feature, but they might want an specialized group to focus on that.

ATC will never be right by default and so as AI traffic, but keep dreaming as too much programming to make it some kind of realistic to the real world (better using Vatsim, IVAO or PilotEdge or a payware addon) for realism ATC. Flight behavior needs the most improvement and given they hired (MS) a physics expert over a year ago they can at least fix this part of the sim.
