Improving the Captain Sim 767-300

Recommended Posts

So the Bluebird 757 is maybe a year away and the CS767-300 was only $9.99...how bad can it be...

Pretty bad, but in truth the VC is really nice and a pleasant place to be in VR, so it's worth trying to fix the worst problems.

Free liveries seem to have been deliberately broken by CS, to make you buy the official ones - either a black collar behind the cockpit or the middle fuselage being black.
However you CAN overwrite the House livery in the Captain sim folder (texture.CS) to get one livery at a time (two counting 4door and 6 door variants).
As a VR flyer I'm not much cocerned with liveries.
May also need to change the Model file and you may need to regenerate the layout.json file if you've added more files. Don't try this if you aren't sure you can do it.

The aircraft is hugely overweight, overpowered and overfueled as they have simply taken the Boeing 747 config ... all can be easily improved by updating the the engines.cfg and flight_model.cfg files. Best way to do this is to create a mod folder. Again don't try this if you aren't sure you can do it.

There is already an improvement mod for the 767-400 (didn't buy this one as I wanted the hybrid steam and glass cockpit, already got the all glass PMDG), which could potentially be partially applied to the -300. I've done this with mixed results - extreme stuttering.

It's not for anyone who wants the full Systems experience, but its been an interesting experiment and I've now got a 767 that looks great, flies reasonably well, encourages me to use the FMC and was worth $10.
Along the way I found a really good Youtube channel by an ex-AA 767 Captain, now retired - FatherTime, a real pleasure to find a relaxed and quietly knowledgeable Youtuber 🙂

Would be interested in any constructive comments (but no pointless knee-jerk anti-CS responses please).

Horizon had seriously started work on it... then abandoned it because they do not want to encourage people to buy Captain Sim.  MasterRob94 made a great salty based mod for the CS B777 that makes it a least as good as the Asobo/Salty 747-8. Since MasterRob is now part of Horizon, he will not be doing anything with it either.

Sounds to me as though they should be paying you.

Hehe....I've been officially crowned as the king  knee-jerk anti-CS responder here.   However......

The 767 is probably my favorite airliner of all time, and I too picked up the 767-300 when it was on sale...and it came with the UPS livery so I was fine with that.  I did buy their P3D 767-300 (also on sale) back before MSFS...i was a good release from them and I always gave them the benefit of the doubt before I commented on their business practices.

Won't even get into how they strung along customers that the freighter was coming...and it did...a few years after announced, and just a painted on cargo door to the pax model and dropped P3d like a hot rock when they saw how big and unsuspecting the new MSFS market was .  Anyway, that alone should give anyone who's never heard of CS and their antics should need to get an idea of what kind of company they are.

That behind us...there is no doubt their modeler and texture guy can make a pretty plane, and it looks great sitting on the ramp...but that is far as I got with it.  Tried a flight...took a few screens, put it back in the hangar.

I can't offer any constructive comments other that for $10 it's not bad as a screenshot tool, but for that is about it for me.  At this point, even if someone made some mods that made her fly better and less like a 747, I still can't see myself flying her, knowing that Sherv and Bluebird are making one that will bring back the glory days of LDS and even further back if you've been around the hobby that long.

I'm glad you're enjoying it and it was money well spent.

I just want to know if there were any CS customers who had a chance to buy the CS TIE Fighter before Disney/Lucas slapped a C&D on them.  They completely wiped any existence of it....closing the forum and insta-zapping any posts that asked anything about it.  Serious want to know how they got those customers to "return" their purchases.  It was only available a few days (if even that)...so a lot of folks here don't even know about it.
But....once you post to the internet...its there for forever....somewhere, so for those who never heard of this brilliant move by CS, here you go:

First I have heard of it but the fact they thought they were going to get away with that is astonishing to me. Though, it probably shouldn't be.

It's not for anyone who wants the full Systems experience

To introduce a bit of balance, it's not meant for those who want the full systems experience and it does indeed look very pretty.
I am one for whom the full systems experience is an unnecessary luxury that I can easily do without.
Some developers, like this one, do not even attempt to provide the full systems experience, but of those that do, most recognise
that there are those who will still buy the full systems experience, even though they will never understand its complexities
and have no interest in doing so.
They therefore allow their models to start either with Ctrl + E, or provide a "ready to take off" state, so that those users can
still enjoy the other qualities of their aircraft model without first spending hours learning the intricacies and programming the FMC.

Why the evangelists of the full systems experience cannot leave the lesser mortals alone to enjoy their ignorance of the fine details of
flying an airliner is another debate altogether.

I bought the -400 for $9.99 and successfully managed to tweak the necessary cfg files to reduce both power and weight and it flew a lot better. Then just started to use mods that became  available on flightsim.to.

However, it was always the -300ER that I wanted, so once again, got this in the sale with the intention of tweaking the cfg files to improve upon the default 747 parameters. Unfortunately, every time that I applied a reduction in the fuel tank arrangement, the sim ended in a stutter-fest. I narrowed it down to which lines were causing the stutters, but never managed to fix it. So just abandoned it. Which is a real shame as it looks lovely both inside and outside of the cockpit.

Exactly that. I really enjoy their models (CS130 excepted of course, as that's not even a finished model), and the fact that I can ctrl-e them, stick a from-the-world-map flight plan on them and just let them get on with it is pretty much all I want from any plane. They may have dodgy business practises but they've never actually swindled me, and as far as I'm aware they're not out there clubbing baby seals or dropping bombs on anybody, so I will likely continue to poke my nose in here when I can be bothered to try and water down the vitriol a bit (and that's not a reference to you Steve)

And yes, it would be interesting to know if anybody did get that Tie Fighter. Saw the sales pitch, might even have gotten an email from them, but I dislike the whole Star Wars thing as much as most people on here seem to dislike CS, so I was never going to buy it.

Ryzen 9 7900X, Corsair H150 AIO cooler, 64 Gb DDR5, Asus X670E Hero m/b, 3090ti, 13Tb NVMe, 8Tb SSD, 16Tb HD, 55" Philips 4k HDR monitor, EVGA 1600w ps, all in Corsair 7000D airflow case.

I changed CenterWingTank to 11960 galls, MainTank2 and MainTank3 to 6010 galls and all the others to 10 gallons.
Didn't change anything else in Fuel and it all works fine.

If a developer goes out of their way to make it so you can't download free liveries, they'll never see a dollar from me. What a.... scam.

I'd would give a homeless or a (person of need) my money first before supporting this developer and their antics but that's just me but will not put judgement on others who do so.

@keithb77 would you be as kind to make the edited files available to download?

I’ve attmepted to alter the CFG.’s on many occasions and can never get any good results.

you’d make a 767 fan very happy if you could make them available. 🙏🏻
