How to get the best image quality using DLDSR+DLSS

What happens in my case is that even if I select "1/2 refresh rate Vsync" in NVCP, whenever I increase the monitor native resolution using DSR either 2.25 or 1.75, the "1/2 refresh rate" feature doesn't work, and Vsync continues to work as a standard Vsync, that is trying to sync at 60 fps, and in heavy scenarios, my system is not always able to provide stable 60 fps, and here is where the stutters come from, at least this is my conclusion.... for the time being... however, it is good to know that with my same hardware and my same MSFS settings you don't have this issue...in the end, I have built my rig just very recently, so maybe I still need to fine tune some settings...

How about using a different method for locking FPS in addition to V-sync, could that work in combination with DSR? E.g. RTSS or FPS lock in NCP? Or using a different V-sync option?

  • One benefit of my recent 4090 purchase is that I don't have to keep doing this tweaking anymore, I run my card at 3440x1440 FG TAA and render scale at 130 and the card eats everything I throw at it.

  • This could very well be the case. Anyhow, it's good to have so many options to choose from, but it can also get unnecessarily confusing and complicated. Besides, TAA is quite old now, whereas DLSS is

  • Just be aware that this approach also increases the load on VRAM quiet considerably when using 1.78 or even 2.25 times the native resolution. Might be fine for 4090 users, all others might check that

Following the discussions above, would a Gsync monitor be a good option for MSFS ? I have conflicting reports... is it really a game changer ?

I have tested different Vsync options with a FPS hard cap under all conditions and I didn't like the results...

I did some short tests now with fixed refresh and then Adaptive (half refresh rate) instead of G-Sync (with and without FG), seems to be a little smoother on my side.

I would say so. It’s extremely more versatile than V-sync. Whenever G-sync is disabled for some reason, I notice screen tearing immediately. Panning is choppy and jerky. And this is with V-sync* on in NCP. When I got my oversized OLED panel, I didn’t intend to use it for MSFS. But when I realized it came with G-Sync and 120Hz, I had to try it out. I’m glad I did, as I’ve never been able to return to my non-Gsync PC monitor.

Similar to this, HDR has also been a big change in how I experience the sim.

*it’s recommended to combine Gsync with Vsync (and ultra low latency) to get max benefits of Gsync.

OK... I have found my sweet spot... DSR 1.75, DLSS Ultra Quality, Vsync "Force On" in Nvidia Inspector.. some other settings "high Quality" on NI, of course DX12 and FG ON. The result is a stable and very smooth 60 fps, no shimmering at all...some minor stutter every now and then associated with panning or turning n the ground with lot of vatsim traffic at heavy airport, but nothing major...hopefully they might be mitigated by the improved memory management coming with SU15......honestly I have no idea what caused my previous issues and FPS drop....most likely a setting I had overlooked...now overall very enjoyable and immersive experience.. the only caveat is the GPU is always working around 95%-98%.... the workaround for this is to set the monitor refresh rate to 30... Vsync will then cap the frame at 30...same smoothness and no noticeable difference in Sim behaviour, but GPU loads reduce to 65% max (less frame to deliver). One extra info.... I disabled multithreading (or whatever is the AMD equivalent for this), and this seems to have had a slight positive impact.

@Cpt_Piett  Quite tempted to replace my 8 yrs old LG Ultrawide monitor with some HDR/GSync same size monitor.... 😀

That’s excellent! Getting there does take some tweaking and trial and error, but it’s worth it in the end. My 4090 is also running at 99-100% at DSR 1.75. Also, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed if you go for a Gsync/HDR monitor.

By the way it seems DLSS 3.7 is out: https://www.pcgamesn.com/nvidia/dlss-update-3-7

I have no idea how to get it as it’s not yet available in https://www.techpowerup.com/download/nvidia-dlss-dll/

Guess what ? I am almost 100% sure that my stutters cause was GSX… I tested pushing back with and without it and the difference in terms of smoothness is significant… I know there is an open thread on this issue on the FSDT forum…

Please explain me why I see (1707 x 1365), (1920 x 1563) in DL Scaling DSR settings ? And what do these numbers mean ?
My native monitor resolution = 2560 x 1440 !

Here's a guide on improving image quality for those using DLSS.

I realise that I'm late to the party here...but I've just stumbled across this thread in the last few days and have just sat down tonight and ran through each of the three step changes.

I've been flying and testing for about 2 hours since and what I can say is that I've noticed a marginal increase in performance, with an increase in fps of between 2-3, but I've noticed a BIG difference in picture quality.

I was flying in 4k and pretty happy with the results I was achieving previous to the changes - but i'm glad I followed your guide as they appear to have significantly improved the quality of my image.

Thanks very much for taking the time to share these tips.

You Sir, are an absolute gentleman!  Cheers,

Calum
