April 11, 20242 yr I'm by no means a physics expert, but coming from a car racing background I do know fair bit about braking, and I have found myself wondering on many occasions if an aircraft really comes to as complete stop on landing as quickly as they do in real life. It may be realistic for all I know, but some planes have got better braking than an LMDh which simply doesn't feel right! Yes prototypes have ultra lightweight chassis/downforce, MASSIVE wheels with state of art disk brake materials whereas planes have 300T chassis with lift(!), teeny weeny dinky wheels with what seems like 60's drum brakes and still stop that 300 tonnes in a hundred yards in MSFS lol. The way I have overcome this to make the landing roll seem more like real life is to not apply brakes until reverse thrust has slowed me to 80kts. Then I apply a light brake sometimes even just pumping them a few times and it produces a much longer and realistic landing rollout... Doing it this way I find myself using the same taxiway exits that get used when I'm a passenger in R/L. It also results in me really having to get on the brakes at times to make the taxiway exit. As an aside, LMDh don't have ABS so it's pretty cool how a GT car with ABS can brake at the same spot if not even a bit later than a prototype and hold them up in the corners when the prototype can have a significantly higher corner min spd and just silly acceleration off the corner compared to the GT cars but at that braking point the ABS can almost make a GT car as capable as a prototype. There’s been a few threads on Avsim lately, discussing short landing performance, where a few airline pilots have contributed. Also I’ve seen videos e.g. by flightdeck2sim (737 RL pilot) where he demonstrates how short landing distance can be in the 737 when everything is optimal. The issue is not whether it’s possible in real life, but the fact that runway conditions and ground friction is not simulated. Yet. It might happen at some stage. This thread is a bit confusing as the title implies that there’s already ground friction simulated, and mixed into the discussion is ground handling.
