SU15 broke my sim. Hangs on Dune Expansion Screen

Featured Replies

Well, after 4 years, I have finally had my sim done in by a sim update.

Came close on a few of the previous updates, but most sim updates went reasonably smoothly for me.

Not SU15. It is showing the correct version 1.37.18.0, but does not get past the Dune Expansion screen. The blue loading bar makes its way all the way to the end, but nothing happens after that.

Before running the sim I updated the xbox app in the windows library. The initial download after starting the sim completed, but the sim hung up on decompressing some files.

After that I renamed the community folder and restarted the sim. No luck.

I closed the sim and restarted the PC. No luck.

I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /SCANNOW and restarted the PC. No Change.

I deleted  *.fspackage files that it was hanging on as per https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016844080-Basic-troubleshooting-How-to-troubleshoot-packages-installation-decompressing-issues and restarted PC. No luck.

I tried the repair option in Add/Remove Programs. No luck.

I uninstalled the sim via the Xbox app which, to my surprise, did not remove all of the official files. I then reinstalled from the the Xbox app. After that the update screen opened again and asked me where I wanted to install the packages. I chose the same folder and drive as my original install. The install seemed to proceed, but  afterward the sim still hangs on the Dune Expansion Screen.😖

Any other suggestions to try before I nuke everything and start from scratch would be appreciated. Time to sleep right now.

If you have any, I would start by removing EVERYTHING  from your community folder and try again.

Funnily enough, this was happening to me a lot in the last few weeks prior to the update which required me to restart the PC and then it would load on a second go.

The update has fixed it for me.

Thanks, but It is empty. I renamed the original folder and created an empty community folder as the first step after the update hung.

Same happened to me. I opened task manager and noticed about 10 NGX Updater processes when I clicked on microsoftflightsimulator .exe. Ended all those processes and msfs finally got past the dune screen. Not sure exactly what NGX Updater is but I think it’s related to nvidia.

You could try and clear your cache folders, could solve a lot of issues...

Just to update, after a couple of uninstalls and reinstalls of the sim and clearing all caches, It now gets to the Welcome screen with no issues. I can go to World Map and set up a flight and click fly. It gets about 2/3 through loading the flight and CTDs every single time. This is in safe mode with empty community folder and no other apps running on my PC.

Pretty frustrated at this point as I am running out of ideas. Any other suggestions are appreciated, but I do not plan on reinstalling Windows, as it would take to long to reinstall and configure all the apps I use for my work.

You’re going to need to start over with your xbox app, and then reinstall the sim. Sorry, but updating the xbox app 1st and then trying a major sim update isn’t a safe bet.  You now have conflicting versions of the app & new ver of the sim runtime.

Make a backup of your addons & set those aside.  Re-do the xbox app, then focus on starting the sim even if its safe mode.

I can't even get that far, not even close.  Doing a reinstall didn't help, so don't bother.

Martin, sorry for your woes.  Just to clarify, are you booting the sim in safe mode or are you trying the sim while in Windows safe mode (or both)?

Thanks. I have tried completely uninstalling the Xbox app, clearing the related registry entries left behind, restarting the PC and reinstalling the Xbox app. Ctd still occurs at the exact same point when trying to load a flight in safe mode or normal mode.

I saw your thread on that. Hope you can get it resolved too. This is certainly discouraging.

I am just starting the sim in safe mode. Windows is in normal mode, but with no other apps running.
