Disappointed with MSFS 2024 Atmosphere and Cloud depiction

To me that looks like a scene from a Disney movie. It doesn't look realistic at all.

Fine for you to think that it doesn't look hyper realistic, but it's not supposed to.

It looks like a static weather preset deliberately made to make the shot look very pretty for a short trailer for the Xbox / gamer crowd.

We really are overanalysing a 153-second teaser trailer at a gaming showcase event.

FSExpo is where flight simmer content will be shown.

  • I'm convinced many people would even find real life weather unrealistic.....

  • Some supposed non-kids throwing tantrums and coming up with wild takes based on a 2+ minute trailer meant for a non-simming audience, and then yammering on about how MS/Asobo are catering to "Xbox kid

  • I can't imagine going over hundreds of posts like this one from here to November if MSFS2024 is finally released on that month 😄

Additionally I want to see dense stratus clouds so I can break out of the bases at the ceiling given on the metar.

You can achieve this in 2020 using a preset.  Solid stratus for hundreds of miles with a breakup for a few miles then solid stratus again.  Finally a nice breakthrough using VNAV.

Life is too short to depend on live weather. 😃

There’s 6 months until release and they have a massive team working on this. Jorg stated that there would be updates to the weather engine and it’s quite possible those changes aren’t represented in that trailer and are being developed still.

It's a nice thought and might be true, but I'd be surprised if they still have a ton of updates to make to the engine this late in development. I guess nobody really knows what we'll see, but I'd be surprised if we saw something leaps and bounds better than 2020. I'd guess incremental improvements are the name of the game w/ this stuff most of the time. Luckily for me I'm perfectly happy with incremental improvement, but I know not everyone feels that way.

Some supposed non-kids throwing tantrums and coming up with wild takes based on a 2+ minute trailer meant for a non-simming audience, and then yammering on about how MS/Asobo are catering to "Xbox kids" is... the height of irony most delicious.

I'm actually starting to enjoy all these epic triggerings, next-level assumptions, occasional entrances by the usual diehards with the usual desperate attempts to dump on MSFS, blinders-on insistence that "MS/Asobo will for sure do X!" while they've already said/shown they'll do Y, etc etc.. It is at least entertainment to keep us occupied until the new sim arrives :)) So please keep at it, this hopefully also has the side effect of making MS/Asobo reveal concrete details sooner (not that it'll help calm all the craziness here anyways lol).

I will be surprised, pleasantly surprised, but surprised, if the weather and atmosphere are substantially different than what we have now. It may be tweaked but there are real hard limits to what can be done across multiple platform hardware and keep performance at an acceptable level. I do not have any real expectations in this area -- I am also content with the weather -- so at least I will not be at all disappointed.

MSFS 2024. Primary Planes: Black Square TBM850, Duke, Baron, Caravan; A2A Comanche; FSReborn Phenom; Fexix A321; PMDG 737-7, 777: Utilities: Active Sky (Passive Mode); BATC, FSLTL.

The clouds argument gets a giant eye roll, because i play fsx and 2020 let alone 2024 looks incredible.

however, i will agree with the point of haze or more specifically nitrous oxide. There are days in Houston/austin where you cant even see the skyscrapers during rush hours. In toxicology we understood it as an inversion layer when increased sunlight, nitrous oxide from cars gets converted to ozone, especially if it hasnt rained in a while. I would hope OP knew that

Joerg will be judged by how many copies his home entertainment game a.k.a. MSFS 2024 will sell, not by if MSFS is the most realistic Flight Simulator or by a specific single niche feature for us AVSIM experts. like it or not, Xbox game studios is a video game publisher, not a developer of  professional pilot training tools.

I just hope that there's a slight improvement from FS2020. I remember what we started with. As long as they're a little better, I'll be happy.

Here is a good example of what OP is referring to with respect to ozone or haze. I must admit it would be cool to see this during rush hour when air quality is poor or dangerous. It is super common in big cities.

x-plane 12's  atmospheric lighting is about the only reason why I sometimes fly it.

p.s. this is KSEA, that's why the air is better than KIAH
