My hopes for significant upgrades to the atmosphere and cloud dynamics have been severely dashed after watching the latest MSFS 2024 trailer. All very disappointing if you were wishing for a proper simulation of atmospheric haze/aerosol depiction and convective showers from realistic convective clouds. It is obvious from a meteorologist and RW pilots point of view the devs have very little to no understanding of basic meteorology regardless of the fact that live weather is based on NEMS output. 1. I have seen little to no evidence of inclusion of atmospheric haze/aerosol density apart from patches of low level mist. Again, the atmosphere has no depth...with almost limitless visibility. For me, this is hugely disappointing as currently the atmosphere in live weather is too clean and never depicts haze. 2. I have seen no evidence of proper convective clouds, towering cumulus or cumulonimbus. In fact, the trailer image of Rio de Janeiro shows a heavy rain shower from a little piddly cumulus cloud just a few hundred (if that!) feet thick. Totally unrealistic. Heavy rain showers have a vertical extent of thousands of feet. Again....very disappointing. 3. The in cloud lightning shown in the helicopter clip is seemingly produced from a stratiform layer of cloud...again totally unrealistic. Lightning is only produced from vigorous convective clouds...not from relatively stable layered cloud decks. Hugely inaccurate. I was really hoping for significant improvements in atmospheric aerosol depiction and proper convective clouds. Sadly, from a trained meteorologists point of view, I have seen little to no evidence of such in the MSFS 2024 trailer. So I'm flight instructor and can't really tell much by looking few seconds of schematics trailer design to attract people of all walks of life. June 13, 20241 yr Haha H-town... Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Hong Kong are the gold standard for ozone.
June 13, 20241 yr I agree with the OP - I guess things could change before release but it is a bit late in the day for this to happen. Unlike most I have not been blown away by the MSFS2024 trailers as there doesn't seem to be much improvement in areas that interest me. But I hope I am proved wrong. June 13, 20241 yr Even 2020 is more than capable of this. None of the haze you're seeing here is rain. This is live weather in India. Visibility is very bad. 5800X3D. 32 GB RAM. 1TB SATA SSD. 3TB HDD. RX 9070XT.
June 13, 20241 yr Yeah every time I’ve flown into MMMX in the sim, it’s been hazy, because it’s Mexico City.

June 13, 20241 yr I am more concerned about flight physics and how the aircraft fly is more important than pretty clouds. The competitor is above both levels at this stage anyways. Step up Asobo in both regards but its not only about graphics and missions. Show us at FS Expo what you got for the people who will stay around in the long run and not just casuals that will get bored and move on the next game release. Casuals will generate new and quick money but the serious simmers will bring you the longevity and serious money for years. JMO

June 13, 20241 yr I feel your pain too, and even feel worst when I look around and see the alternatives in other platforms are no better, with the exception of specific ones like Condorsoaring for soaring simulation... Still, I do prefer, at it's present state, the weather in MSFS when used with ASFS to what I have, for instance, in X-Plane... and P3D... It can very accurately display most of the weather scenarios if you're able to forget about some graphic details... and about the lack of mechanical and other effects like for instance when flying through or nearby convective clouds. OFC if we think about the actual effects of flying near or even through !!! convective clouds, well..., that's another story, but then again, I can't say because I haven't been able to start MSFS 2024 yet, although I do dream about it every night 🙂 I have been so glad with the overall experience in MSFS that, honestly, I've learned to forgive about some details that I surely would like to see addressed, but I can perfectly live without given the many positive aspects of the simulation. And they say Weather is one of the areas receiving update in 2024, so... let's calmly wait and in the meanwhile enjoy what we have 🙂 Ah! It looks like a static weather preset deliberately made to make the shot look very pretty for a short trailer for the Xbox / gamer crowd. Actually I do think it looks "hyper realistic". That is the problem. It means it is overdone and exaggerated in so many aspects. What I want is a "realistic" rendition of the world in the flightsim, not a "hyper-realistic" one. This is exactly what I am afraid of. That they make the flightsimulator look pretty for the crowds who think that the pictures that Hollywood creates are looking like the real world. The real world just doesn't look spectacular in 99 % of the scenarios - that is what makes the 1% scenarios so spectacular in the real world. It seems that in the sim they try to make it look spectacular all the time and everywhere. For me it has always been the ultimate goal of flightsimulation to make it as realistic as possible - and not overloaded with all kinds of totally overdone image enhancements effects that make it look like a cartoon. Would be a shame if MS/Asobo do not have the ambition to create a realistic rendition of the world any more.
