Disappointed with MSFS 2024 Atmosphere and Cloud depiction

Featured Replies

If everything about MSFS is so bad and arcadey and not realistic and whatnot, why not just forget about it and use the ‘other sim’ since it excels so much and is more realistic in all aspects…? Let me and the xbox crowd enjoy the game and all others can just go back too the ‘blade element theory’ FAA aproved hyper duper realistic sim, graphicly stuck in 2010…

For me the career mode is the most exciting thing about 2024 and I have been waiting for something like this since I first started simming with FSX back in 2010…

  • I'm convinced many people would even find real life weather unrealistic.....

  • Some supposed non-kids throwing tantrums and coming up with wild takes based on a 2+ minute trailer meant for a non-simming audience, and then yammering on about how MS/Asobo are catering to "Xbox kid

  • I can't imagine going over hundreds of posts like this one from here to November if MSFS2024 is finally released on that month 😄

Edit: double post

I don't see a problem with asking/demanding/wanting more and better.

13600KF - AIO - 32GB DDR4 - RTX4070 - UW1440p GSync - USB DAC - 2TB NVMe - Windows 11 Pro - Gladiator NXT EVO - 1 Gbps Fiber  - MSFS 2024

don't spam the post button if your post doesn't go through right away, refresh the page and check.

I don't know if this works in FireFox or Edge, but in Chrome if you middle mouse click the refresh button it will open the same page in a new tab, so you can see if your post went through or not.

That should help in preventing accidental multi-posts.

AvSim is still struggling with server issues itself and pressing the Submit button once sometimes posts the content twice, as it has a tendency to do from time to time.

Are you reffering to me? If so, i didnt spam the post button, i lost internet connection and somehow it ended up with a double post, sorry for the inconvinience……

Personally I'd like to thank the OP for his detailed expert analysis of the trailer in question. I hope he sticks around and contributes more.

Without facts, opinions have no foundations.

Experts (extremely smart ones) gave us the hardware and software tools to do amazing tasks we could only dream of before computers.

As a user, I don't boot up my PC and run software and ever think.."hmm I don't NEED experts anymore. It works without them!"

First of all: I am a meteorologist, and I love MSFS2020 and I will most probably love MSFS2024. I think everyone of us has his/her own certain aspects of the sim that we are paying most of our attention to. For me, personally, it is (not very surprising) the weather. How it looks, how it feels, how it is simulated and how realistic it is. Let's make one thing very clear, and I think no one can honestly deny that: MSFS2020 brought the weather depiction within a flight sim to a whole new level that no other sim could deliver so far. That alone was a huge accomplishment and a huge  leap forward.

But: There are some aspects of the weather system in MSFS2020 that drive me crazy sometimes. Especially because from what I can tell, these aspects are NOT due to some technical limitations of some platform or because it is a too complicated thing to simulate properly. It might be because of other things having more priority, I don't know. And I have to agree with the OP that there is some evidence in the trailers that at least some of these things might not significantly change in MSFS2024.

These things include:

- Lack of variety in cloud types, especially high altitude and cirrus clouds. The current cloud engine is simply not made for some cloud types. Cirrus clouds can often dominate the look and feel of the sky. This aspect is completely missing in MSFS2020
- Clouds are way too transparent, especially in live weather, and clout type variety and depiction of towering cumulus es even much worse than in the presets. Towering cumulus and thunderstorms are pretty bad in live weather, much too shallow, and precipitation and sometimes even lightning visible beneath what everyone of us would normally call a fair-weather cloud.
- Visibility far to high in most areas, especially where no METAR is present.

I completely understand that at least some of this might not be important or even relevant to others, for me it is, and especially the quality problems in live weather drive me crazy. First of all because I almost always use live weather, and the sim proves that in can do better if you play around with the presets or use some add ons.

Conclusion: Let's wait what MSFS2024 will bring on the table and then we can judge 🙂 I am really looking forward to that release, what ever the weather system will look like by then.

MSFS 2024 target audience is not primarily meteorologists or us real pilots, but as I pointed out before, the huge home entertainment market. otherwise they would indeed have put much more focus on weather, atc and etc 🤣.

Joerg has to decide: what sells more: these preview videos or a sticker

"Now with WAAS/RNP GPS certified for even the most challenging IFR CAT III weather"

"While National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports most commonly find human error to be the direct accident cause, weather is a primary contributing factor in 23 percent of all aviation accidents."

https://www.transportation.gov/sites/dot.gov/files/docs/kulesa_Weather_Aviation.pdf

But who knows, just like their first implementation lacked any serious avionics, perhaps they will let Workingtitle polish MSFS 20204 up here and there in the coming years now that their GPS mission is accomplished.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

I would put this topic in the nbd category though... flight mechanics and smooth well optimized gameplay is all i care about. Reminds me of the old man argues with cloud meme

why not just improve on those aspects the community has asked for the most - for several years. I don't remember career mode was among them.

" the ‘other sim’ since it excels so much and is more realistic in all aspects…?"

who exactly said that in this whole thread?

Agreed. The first two will be great if they addressed it. And related to this either improve the METAR blending for live weather, or give us an option to use pure Meteoblue global data (like pre-SU7 which I dearly miss). In any case, at a bare minimum if weather stays as-is in v2020 to v2024 that's still fine for me given all the other net positives coming. But obviously with the huge team they have, and what they've said re: the areas they're improving, there has to be *some* improvements in weather coming to v2024, otherwise that'd be very very surprising and would make zero sense. Let's see.

That’s true, unfortunately you do not know. Seth specifically mentioned in a dev Q&A that there are limits on cloud density as this heavily impacts the way the rendering engine computes lightning and casts shadows. Who knows all the other factors they have to consider for all addressed issues.
