Apparently I was mistaken. It does indeed decrease after the critical altitude.

Rocksolid 35 inches until the critical altitude. But I was mistaken  as to when this decrease would take place as I was not even aware of a critical altitude. One learns everyday.

So to my answer my own initial question: It was me

    One more vote for the C414.  As far as twins go, I'd say it is a tossup between the the Piston Duke and the C414.  Both are great.
