Broken taxiway edge lights in MSFS2020

Featured Replies

Given the known issue with the broken taxiway edge lights in MSFS2020, I was wondering if anyone knows if they will be repaired in this MSFS2024. Very unrealistic situation so far and not fixed even after 4 years.

Many airports don't use taxiway edge lighting anymore, just the green centerline lighting.

I've seen airports switch to reflective blue posts but I wouldn't say "many" airports don't use the blue taxiway lighting anymore.  I'd say most mid to large airports still use LED or traditional blue lamps for edge lighting.

Do you think that having taxiway edge lights inside taxiways is it normal? Would you happen to know anything about LVO and LVP to make such a statement?

I think you guys were talking about two different things.  He meant the lighting on the edge and you mean the location of the physical lamps.  Yes I agree it's very annoying hehe.  Probably some AI failure of some sort.

Yeah it was the reflective posts I was more referring to. The actual blue lights are old school leftovers and not required even for Low Vis ops. The older half of the airport I work at (CYVR) still has them, but the newer half (25 years old now) has very few blue edge lights on taxiways yet are all good down to 600 foot rvr.

As for the op intended meaning, I didn't realize he was referring to the lighting being physically in incorrect locations.

Runway and taxi lights in MSFS aren't individually placed. They are programatically generated, based on:

A. when drawn as part of taxi lines, placed depending on the number of the vertices (segments) of the drawn line, meaning irregularly spaced, especially in turns; (AI uses this method)

B. drawn as "light rows", evenly spaced, but unless the rows are broken at intersections (lots of work for scenery devs) they will still be placed in the middle of taxiways

With AI generated airports, they would have to find a much better logic to resolve this. I hope they do, I always cringe when I have to run over them. With human-developed airports, it's pure laziness. Plenty of "payware" that use either or both of the above methods.

Also I forgot to mention - you could try the Black Square Real Taxiways addon - they have a Europe and USA edition

If I recall it fixes the random signs and taxi edge light poles that shows up in the middle of the taxiways

Another sim where developer sloppiness have to be fixed with 3rd party devs and our money.

Those lamps in the middle of taxi way, airport cars driving taxi ways and even runways, trees at the end of runway - immersion breakers not addressed for years.

I had to turn all road vehicles off at airports it was getting ridiculous. Often had multiple vehicles being directed by atc, holding at runway entries etc. Being told myself to stop taxiing to let a car have priority at an intersection was the final straw.

I turned all fauna off too it seems to have helped a little with the killer threshold trees but not much. I warn my 'passengers' we're about to do evasive manoeuvres on approach to avoid the redwoods. 🙄

Lol, when atc mistakes a car for a plane...personnel need new binoculars.

ASOBO spends time and money for landmarks and cities updates, yet simple but annoying issues cannot be fixed.

A lot of simple and annoying issues have been fixed, so you are wrong. Apparently they have more money than just for the landmarks.

Users tend to think, that what annoys "me" the most must be the "simplest" to fix and the dev is to blame for not sticking to "my" priority list.

MSFS default airports were created by a mostly automated process, which is why you have misplaced taxi lights, taxi lights in the middle of intersections etc.

Those problems can be fixed, but it requires a human to load the airport in developer mode and manually adjust the taxi light positions. I did that for my home airport, and it took several hours of work.

It is by no means a “simple” process.

Considering that there are tens of thousands of default airports in MSFS, MS/Asobo does not have the manpower to go through and fix all of them. The world hub is a step in the right direction where fixes can be crowd sourced and uploaded.

Those things are not on 'my' list but are reported multiple times by many.

If ASOBO have implemented AI for airport creation process and as a result we have multiple issues with wrong, missing, or displaced markings, then algorithm is wrong and have to be updated - 4 years not enough for this task ?
