any feedback from any one with a 3080 would be really appreciated on either headset

dont want to buy a new GPU

Don't own either HMDs, but here's my take as a rtx 3080 ti owner.  If you got the money the Crystal Light is the way to go.  Consider that with it for now you can lower its display resolution to get better FPS, and when you eventually upgrade your GPU that higher resolution is waiting to be utilized.  That's something that can't be said of the Quest 3.

If you don't want to get a new GPU, you can test how your 3080 might handle the Crystal Light resolution by cranking up the Quest resolution to 2880 pixels and see how it performs. And likewise with the Quest 3 resolution (2208 pixels).

I doubt that a 3080 will give you a remarkably great experience when pushing 2880 pixels...

How do you crank up the quest  2. resolution? Is that in the quest software where you do like 1.2 1.3 times or is it in the open XR toolkit kit?

thanks very much for your reply

Both. But the OpenXR Toolkit setting overrides the Quest software setting, and in OpenXR Toolkit you can set a specific pixel width x height resolution. So that would be easiest way to test how your GPU performs at specific resolutions.

Higher resolutions use more VRAM. When I got my Quest 3 and had a 3080 I was often hitting the VRAM limit and getting reduced performance. So that's why I doubt a Crystal Light will give you happy fun times...

The visuals through Quest 3's USB Link compression are terrible.

Unless you are there hard up about going wireless I'd say go for the Pimax if you are strictly seated simming.

I can't setting for anything less Display Port based HMDs.

Thanks very much.   I get steady 45fps but I just wish I could make cockpit instruments a little sharper.  Ramped up the resolution in open xr and certainly sharpened it up but Little shimmering although frames stayed around 40

Have it in open xr as 2371 x 2420 for the 45 fps just wish I knew what the best figure here was. Any suggestions ?

there are so many settings 😲

I would be very unhappy with those MSFS settings in the guide, with everything low or off. The guide illustrates that you would need to sacrifice a lot of the visuals that make MSFS VR an immersive experience in order to run a Pimax Crystal on a 3080. So to say that "you would be a lot happier" is a very bold promise.

Upscaling should be off. You want your GPU to output actual pixels and do the workload needed to generate those pixels, and not have the upscaling algorithm generate pixels, in order to test how your GPU handles the workload.

Select the System menu in OpenXR toolkit. Select Yes to Override Resolution. Adjust the Display Resolution Per Eye so it is around the Quest 3 or Pimax Crystal resolution, or preferably 10 - 20% more. That should give you an idea of how your GPU would handle the native Quest 3/Pimax display resolution.

I would assume he going to upgrade his gpu in the long-run. I tried the settings and did not notice any visual degradation.

The Pimax is not very comfortable when it's been sitting on your face for a few hours. I can see the appeal of the BigScreen Beyond.

“Upscaling should be off” does that mean I change the size to 100% .?

The new Pimax headsets are significantly lighter, e. g. the Crystal Light is only negligibly heavier than the G2.

@Bozdog Are you looking at the current Pimax Crystal? There are two new ones coming out, one of which (Crystal Light) is available for order and the Super is coming in Q4. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to go for the older Crystal at this time, unless it's a budget question.

The Super will probably not work well with a 3080 since it's very high resolution, although dynamic foveated rendering will alleviate the performance impact. If you want to upgrade your GPU in the future however, maybe it's something to look into. Otherwise, the Crystal Light seems to be very good.

The Upscaling setting has the following options as far as I remember: Off, NIS, FSR, CAS. Select Off.
