FSX Flight Plans?

Recommended Posts

How do I make a round-robin flight plan with waypoints in FSX? I tried dragging the non-existant line when the destination and origin are the same.I tried planing to a different airport then adding WPs. That worked but, I can't change/drag the destination AP back to my starting point.I tried to open the pln file in notepad and modify it. However, notepad saved it as txt.I went online last night and looked for a simple flight planning program but all I found were IFR around the world, great circle programs that are more than I want or need. I also can't find anything on FSX flight plans in the SKD or a tutorial.'Lost in the wilderness'

I'm pretty sure (though not 100% certain) that you can't create a flight plan that allows you to take off and land at the same airport facility - so you'll need to create two flight plans ... one for the leg out ... and a second one for the leg back in.Load the second flight plan after getting halfway.

From your last waypoint (Airport) just change your destination thru ATC. Then just change your destination airport to the original departure airport when the flight planner pops up.

And, if it's just a matter of navigation ... you can always just program your GPS at the last waypoint to Direct to your original airport.

I tried to open the pln file in notepad and modify it. However, notepad saved it as txt.Hilight the file in the Windows Explorer - press F2 - change the file extension to .PLNYou cannot make a FS flightplan which ends at the same airport which it starts without opening the .PLN file in notepad - editing the last entry and saving the file.Yes, it is a text file with xml tags - just change the extension.

John-One thing to keep in mind is that you can use saved flightplans from FS9 in FSX! Just copy and paste them from 'My Documents / Flight Simulator Files' to 'My Documents / Flight Simulator X Files' then browse and load the saved FSX flightplan in the usual way. It works for me!Regards,http://www.my-buddy-icon.com/Icons/objects/red_3d_plane.gifAlex ChristoffN562ZBaltimore, MD

Thanks guys. I will try changing the destination airfield while in Notepad and then renaming it. I just want a small out & back flight plan with a couple WPs for checking out new aircraft. I want the GPS to show the route, so I can test it.

You can also just do a short point to point flight between two VORS at departure and destination airports. Lock on to the destination VOR in NAV mode, monitoring the DME as you go. Then just turn around at the destination and head back toward the departure airfield and lock on to it's local VOR to return.Just a Thought,http://www.my-buddy-icon.com/Icons/objects/red_3d_plane.gifAlex ChristoffN562ZBaltimore, MD
