What is the current VR of choice today for MSFS?

HP Reverb G2: This is my go-to headset for MSFS. The resolution (2160x2160 per eye) is amazing, giving you super sharp visuals, which makes a huge difference in flight sims. The tracking is solid, and it’s comfortable enough for those long flights. It’s also reasonably priced for what you get, so it’s a great middle-ground option.

And it is discontinued by HP and relies on WMR, which will also be discontinued by Microsoft Windows. The reverb will only remain useable if you're not updating Windows from this point of time. So definitely no recommendation.

I was planning on ordering a Pimax Crystal Light but the delays and quality control stories are becoming increasingly offputting. I was then thinking about holding out for the Pimax Crystal Super but I remain concerned over Pimax as a consistent manufacturer and don’t really want to play the VR headset lottery especially when returns are a pain. Can someone offer a suitable alternative that’s equivalent to Pimax Crystal Light in terms graphical fidelity and unlike the Reverb G2 is fairly future proof?

Both are on my shortlist. Thank you, I will explore further.

Actually the more I research the more the Quest 3 will suit my needs. I have a 4090 so I should get the best out of it and it will prove versatile away from MSFS.

I'm on the fence about the Crystal Light for exactly the same reasons. Reading their discord its seems theres a high degree of confusion amongst people who pre-ordered months ago when they'll get their headset - doesn't inspire confidence.

I'd like to try the Quest 3 but I worry that the resolution isn't going to be good enough. From what I've been reading and trying to upskill myself with, I kind of think that crystal light resolution is the minimum I'm going to want to get a decent expirence. Happy to be proven wrong tho...

Yes, that’s the only thing that concerns me is how clear the Quest 3 will be when in the cockpit and trying to read the instruments and dials. Through the lens footage seems to suggest it’s satisfactory for my liking though, but that’s obviously  subjective. Anyone with a Quest 3 - can you confirm?

In the aircraft I fly with my Quest 3, which is various configurations of steam gauges and glass cockpits, I almost never need to lean in to better read the instruments. The only exception is when entering a flight plan in the G1000 MFD in the Cessna Caravan or similar, as the right side of the middle display is just a little too far right, and the numbers and letters you dial through are just a little too small. But I only need to lean 15-20cm closer to see ok. But when it comes to the left side of the cockpit in every plane, I have no problem reading the instruments and dials.

Useful feedback, thank you.

I fly with a joystick and map the instrument view to the main trigger.  In VR this rapidly moves your head closer to the instrument in the centre of your vision; there is no change in scale.  I use a Quest 3 with a 4090 and I am very impressed with the clarity.

I had the Quest 3 and returned it. It was comfortable, but the resolution was not high enough. I had to lean in to read the gauges, and everything in the foreground and the horizon was kind of blurry. Just to be fair, at the time I did not have a fast enough GPU to crank all the settings up.

I have the Crystal Light, and it's almost as good as my 4K monitor. My only complaint it's not as comfortable, and it seems cheaply made.

I'm surprised there were so few mentions of the Pico headsets here. While I understand that people might prefer to go for more well-known brands such as Meta, the Pico 4 is for me one of the very best "budget" choices for starting VR.

The Pico Neo 3 was mentioned but as far as I've seen, even though it has a display port (a very strong point indeed), it's still using Fresnel lenses and has a slightly lower resolution than the Pico 4, which has pancake lenses. The price of the Pico 4 is also very attractive, especially when some sale appears.

The only drawback of the Pico 4 is that it has no display port. This is a "streaming" headset, which means that the video is compressed before being sent to the computer by Wifi or USB. This compression can sometimes lead to small video artifacts in some conditions, but it has never disturbed me so far. The Meta Quest 3 is also a "streaming" headset without display port, and it's slightly more expensive than a Pico 4, so I would really encourage VR "starters" to take a serious look at the Pico offering. Might be an excellent choice to start for a limited budget, before switching to a much more expensive headset later on... if needed 😛

When my brother had to replace is old Rift-S a few months ago, he hesitated to buy a Quest 2 or a Quest 3. All these $1000+ headsets were completely excluded, too expensive. The Quest 3 was also a bit too expensive (more than $600 at that time) so he was considering falling back on the Quest 2. After I introduced him with the Pico 4 and gave it to him for a week, he checked the price (on Amazon UK there was a nice sale at that time) and ordered a new Pico 4 right away 😄

Of course, if you have a super budget allowing you to buy one of these $2000+ RTX4090 video cards and such, then you'll probably prefer to buy a higher quality headset such as Pimax and you would be very right to do so ! Unfortunately I don't have that kind of money to spend, so I had to aim at a good price/quality ratio and the Pico 4 was my choice.

Did you use VD or air link? Initially I also did not like the picture I was getting in Quest3. But after I installed VD, everything had completely changed in a better way. But I also ordered Crystal Light.

My choice too and for the price it is much better than I expected. I can read most of the cockpit gauges and only have to lean in for the small print.

Have previously owned both the Rift and Rift s and for me the Pico 4 is twice the clarity  of Rift s.

One other point. I find the headset comfortable out of the box so for £300 it is a bargain.

Be aware you do not necessarily need a 4090 graphics card but you do need a fast card for all of these headsets, in my case AMD 6900xt.

Hmmm, thats a good bit of feedback. OK, I'll look into current delivery times to Australia and see about ordering one. If it doesn't work out, I'll know who to blame 😁
