July 30, 20241 yr I know, there's probably a ton of similar topics lately on Avsim. Just needed to vent a little. I'm getting this message pretty much every flight, sometimes several times per flight. It happened in the current flight and I had to go to menu=>data and turn bing data world graphics back on. Took a few minutes for that to happen. It's just such a nuisance... Is there anything that can be done about this from a user perspective? I'm using a VPN, does that influence things? Should I have it off? 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5

Happens to me often when i use Programmetry to on ( most of my flights to Off normal ) to off this not happens, so seems no matter how good and fast you internet conection is it happens anyway - so i don't like that an d better keep it of and i am not a big fan of Programmetry at all.. cheers 😉 08.2024 new PC is online : ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F GAMING WIFI Mainboard, AMD Ryzen™ 9 7950X3D Prozessor, G.Skill DIMM 64 GB DDR5-6000 (2x 32 GB) Dual-Kit, MSI GeForce RTX 4090 VENTUS 3X E 24G OC Grafikkarte, 2x WD Black SN850X NVMe SSD 4 TB - Drive C+D, WD Gold Enterprise Class 12 TB for storage HDD, Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1000W PC - Power supply, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO CPU Aircooler with 7 Heatpipes, Design Meshify 2 White TG Clear Tint Tower-Case, 3x 4K monitors 2x32 Samsung 1x27 LG 3840x2160, Windows11 Prof. 23H2 - now Windows11 Prof. 25H2 Flightsimulator Hardware: Honeycomb Throttle Bravo, Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, Logitech Flight Joke System, XBox Controller, some Thrustmaster stuff, Winwing CDU Panels.

The CDN selects the best server to connect to based on your IP address, if you're connecting via a VPN it will use that IP which may be less that ideal. There's also overhead with a VPN that you wouldn't have otherwise. The only reason I would use a VPN is if the connection to the Azure network was messed up with my ISP, and even then it would be a temporary thing until it was fixed. Brian W KPAE

July 30, 20241 yr Interesting note above about PM cause I always fly with it off as well but in addition, I'm always using the map enhancement mod. Not going to say I've never seen it with it but it is rare.

These networking issues have come up in numerous postings here on AVSIM and someone always suggests using a VPN, etc. Presumably the nice folks at Microsoft understand way better than me how the cloud (including CDNs) work, so what benefit do I add to the process by trying to outguess their content delivery network through the use of a VPN, which seems just to add additional network latency and bandwidth constraints. Perhaps bouncing around with a VPN might have worked in the old days before the extensive deployment of CDN technology or with a less sophisticated vendor than MS, but I doubt that I have the knowledge to somehow guess my way to better bandwidth today. If anyone knows how to do this reliably and consistently, please let me know. BTW, I acknowledge that there are really good reasons to use VPNs for security, etc., but getting better bandwidth just doesn't seem to be one of those use cases. July 30, 20241 yr Looks like a MSFS server outage ... https://azure.status.microsoft/en-gb/status Edited July 30, 20241 yr by Nemo - Harry 9800x3D (Strix x870e-E) - 64GB RAM (DDR5 6000, CL 30) - RTX 5090, 34'' 1440p OLED HDR - Windows 11 Pro (1TB M.2) - MSFS 2024 (MS Store, 4TB M.2).
July 30, 20241 yr I’m not having any bandwidth issues but I am seeing a lot of instability in the sim since that global IT outage, especially in the Fenix which I find really unusual as she has been the most rock solid, I’ve had a few CTD”s while at the gate lately while prepping for a flight. July 30, 20241 yr I'm afraid that like many dodgy traders, Microsoft are happy to take your money and then not provide what you paid for. A bit like a car dealer or estate agent. July 30, 20241 yr Author I don't know anything about CDN (did a quick google), but I'll try a few flights without VPN. I would be interested to know if the bandwidth issues happen more frequently with VPN on as some posts seem to suggest. I've mainly been using VPN for higher download speeds for world updates etc, but don't really need it in day to day usage. 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 64GB DDR5
