Western Australia – Jet Tour – Part 1

Western Australia – Jet Tour – Part 1

Western Australia encompasses the western third of the land area of Australia.  The full route is over 1800nm in length. Long legs will require high cruise speeds and the tour was planned with the default CJ4.  The entire tour will take several weeks to complete.

We begin our tour at Port Hedland (YPPD) whose deep natural anchorage made it the perfect location for the export of iron ore.  It is 217nm east and our first stop -  the isolated mining town of Telfer (YTEF).   The town of Telfer suffered from the decision to move the Telfer mine from residential to a fly-in fly-out workforce. Commercial services were withdrawn, and the existing housing is now used for the accommodation of the mine's mobile work force.

We backtrack 264nm to the west to Paraburdoo (YPBO) – another mining town in the Pilbara region.  Most of the town's residents are employed by Pilbara Iron's mining operation and the supporting services.  Heading south 211nm we reach Meekatharra (YMEK), a former gold rush town, and a regional home to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.  The open pit nickle mine of Mount Keith (YMNE) is a comparatively short 115nm to the east.   Leonora (YLEO) in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia is only 104nm further on and will conclude part one of the tour if we make it that far.  Part 2 will begin from whatever airport we stop at in Part 1.
