FS2024, are you at all bracing for disappointed?

Featured Replies

"Disappointment" is hard to say, because disappointment relies on specific expectations not being met.

I'm excited for MSFS2024, because it's Asobo's first chance to put a lot of development time and resources towards a more holistic rebuilding of some of the more core building blocks of the simulator, which I suspect has held back their ability to comprehensively fix some nagging issues in the current version.  And not just that, but it's their first chance to do that while also having collected four years worth of accumulated knowledge, wisdom and awareness of the biggest problems the sim is perceived to have. Stuff like the fundamental physics and translations from ground to air and vice versa.

Once a game or piece of software is in the public's hands, it can be hard to make bigger changes to the core guts of it in post-release updates.  A whole new release lets them do that, despite them obviously carrying over a ton from the current iteration.

There will invariably be bugs, problems and shortcomings they have to address, because that's just the nature of complex software and games.  I won't be disappointed by that.  Any disappointment I feel will come down to what they've said about the new simulator and what they've worked on, and how that squares with the shipped product.

Also all in on day one. None of the major bugs/issues w/ MSFS2020 have ever been infuriating to me like they are to some, just minor annoyances. Big picture, I've loved every second of it and I expect

I hope that they have an algorithm for replacing blurred areas in the Bing data with appropriate higher resolution textures. Those areas look ridiculous in MSFS 2020.

As far as I'm concerned, MSFS 2020 is dead. I've already uninstalled it.

On day one of the release of MSFS 2024 I'll be buying the Deluxe Premium version and won't look back.

Not just the inferior flight dynamics (maybe GA are flying well, but the airliners might as well still be on rails) but also the weather and GTA5 graphics have me flying XP12 90% of the time since a year or more ago. Even the taxiway lines / lights being drawn all over the place triggers me now - such a 'small' detail but yet completely wrong even after 4 years. Same for the default airports, a joke. I might purchase FS24 if the thing is a marked improvement over 2020, but I sure as hell won't be buying any 'deluxe' or 'premium' edition!

I am also one of those who expect much more from flight dynamics, sensations and physics.

I am not going to get into battles between different simulators I have MFS, Xplane, DCS and BMS on my computer. What I don't know if it's a problem of the flight models of the simulators or of the developers who are not interested in adjusting better but for me there is a big difference between A2A and the rest of the aircraft in MFS why I have no problem to continue with A2A in 2020 if I don't see improvements in the rest of add-ons.

Day one for me...I mean january 1st 2025. Personally I never buy on day one.

I am not sure that I understand this. Have you totally lost interest in MSFS 2020 because you have seen "the future", and now "the present" looks and feels rubbish??

As I mentioned before, simming for is a "winter activity", so I don't really sim between April and October. Which means that by the time I'm back, the new version will be just around the corner.

I just flew a short comparative flight ending with a difficult circle to land approach in both the PMDG and Zibo 737s. No appreciable differences.

The weather was generally right in both sims. But it's never really close to what's actually outside in either...

Both have fairly good approximations of winds, which is what's most important to me.

GTA graphics...? LoL, dude - whatever.

Yes, there are a number of improvements needed in both sims...

And here's the best part: they're both improving in their respective areas.

I will let it bake for about 6 months before buying. One big reason is my weak old computer, I really need to upgrade which I plan to do this year. If I had a beast machine I'd probably break my personal rule (never buying games at launch) and get it on Day 1.

It looks fantastic , I'm specially excited about the forest autogen and updated terrain as I've really gotten stuck into bush flying.

I will wait a week until the dust settles, and I will get the Ultimate version.

I am a MSFS simmer for 35 years now - formerly there was a narrative in the community that there is allways a good new MSFS version followed by a poor one - so I skipped a few versions. FS2020 was i.m.h.o. revolutionary in some respects - whilst FS2024 will be more evolutionary - otherwhise the addon combatibility would not be so evident. So FS2024 will be more a large „sim update“ than a really new version.

So I am relaxed now and enjoy FS2020 still a good time - maybe I really enjoy to use the sim for a longer time without frequent SUs and WUs, that often but not allways bring more fun into the flight sim experiance.

There are still so many planes and and destinations that I want to enjoy in FS2020 so that my desire for a new simulator version is not jet so strong.

Should have thrown out your computer while you are at it and already ordered a new one. 😉

From all information so far, FS2024 should run better than MS2020, so get in the queue on day 1 😀

I think I will be very pleased with the ability to walk around. Not because it has anything to do with flying such as a preflight walk around ( I can do that quite happily with the existing showcase camera), but because I am so looking forward to how this digital twin actually works and looks. I mean Jorg has been spruiking it like crazy along with those much maligned pebbles.  I have my doubts about the level of this fidelity but I am desperate to see how good this enhanced digital world actually is up close so much in fact, that the first thing I'm going to do is to climb Mt Everest!  I hope it's challenging but can be successfully achieved and if it is,  well then I guess I couldn't think of a better hill for my doubts to die on!!  3PD's are going to have a field day (and payday) supporting this new way of life with cars, motorbikes, ships boats, canoes ...you name it, they will develop it and Jorg has said as much. The world will quite literally be our oyster. We will in fact have a sim inside a sim or maybe a sim outside a sim depending on your viewpoint where flying is an interconnected activity but no more than any other interconnected activity and you don't have to enjoy flying or even bother doing it. Just buy FS2024 and enjoy exploring the digital world in whatever free roam vehicle takes your fancy. Will you be able to run, rather than just walk? You know, crouch, lie down, sleep etc? How about attempting the Marathon Des Sables?  Or if you are into extreme how about the Dakar Rally? Oh and I am a recent convert to VR. How will that look as I climb Mount Everest or speed over sand dunes? So much to learn about this yet.

However, I expect to be disappointed with immediate improvements in actual flight simulation. ATC, weather, hi-rise RWY/TXY lights in the middle of crossing taxiways and high speed turnoffs, ground traffic on suicide missions to drive under your aircraft along with ground service people walking through your props or just standing where you need to taxi. The general poor fidelity of default airfields especially night lighting and markings which presumably should be able to be a digital twin? We shall see but not holding my breath on any of this and yet some of these long standing and basic flight sim issues seem very simple. I know Jorg made various statements and alluded to WX and ATC improvements at the FS Expo so something will happen but somehow it's been four years and I just don't expect any of this to be fixed on day one of FS2024, so how much longer will we have to wait I wonder? My primary reason for buying FS2024 will be flying not for walking so unless there is immediate advancement in the flight sim aspects of this simulator,  I don't see the necessity to move too quickly into FS2024. But that's just me. Not talking for anyone else!

The other thing which crosses my mind is what hardware will be required to meet the performance requirements. And, I don't mean min specs type of performance.  Some users will need new rigs. They should have got them ages ago so FS2024 will be the impetus they need. But some of us with midfield rigs will need to wait and see how this all works. MS is only going to download what you need and the servers will effectively have you as a client. This will help the Xbox guys and give wider access to people with less than special gaming rigs.   We will certainly have to wait to find this out before investing heavily in high performance video cards and CPU's.

Some of these things will all be explained in the forthcoming workup videos and tutorials prior to release  but just like designing a B777X, it's not until you fly the airplane you realise that those massive engines are trying to fall off!!

So I wish to make a clarion call to all our first day buyers. We are sending you in first. You are our special operatives and reconnaissance teams whose task is to relay back to us the facts of the matter. It won't be easy. Some of you will suffer enormous wait times and then have corrupted downloads and have to do it all again. Some will suffer CTD's they have never experienced before. Some will be bitterly disappointed with the size and shape of the pebbles. And of course, some of you will just not make it out and FS2024 will be declared wiped from your computers for ever.  But, it's a sacrifice the rest of us are willing to make in the pursuit of flight, free roaming and truth. We wish you a speedy journey.

In the meantime,

Per Ardua Ad Astra

Cheers

Terry
