World Update XVII: United Kingdom and Ireland

Recommended Posts

I installed this free update in the marketplace recently only to discover that it isn't comparable with MSFS (or at least not my copy of MSFS).  After installing it MSFS would crash during startup everytime.  It was only after I deleted this update that MSFS would startup normally again.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there a fix for it?

You are not the only one. This world update caused me the same issue. I thought it might be a conflict with something in my community folder, but not the case. I finally narrowed it down to World Update XVII. I then expanded the update in the content manager by clicking on the list icon at the right side of it and tested each sub component until I found the culprit which is the "Bush Trip - Scotland portion." So you can try reinstalling the update, expanding it and just deleting that portion. That way you get all of the rest of the update except for the Bush Trips.

Why no one else was reporting this CTD issue with this update is beyond me and I don't have the patience for reporting it on the official Zendesk. Anyway, I'm glad to hear I was not the only one, and hope my remedy resolves it for you.

Well, you learn something every day.  I had no idea you could do that!  Could be useful 🙂

That's probably because most people do not have this issue. I certainly haven't and if there were many more we would have read about it it by now on these or the official forums.
It is most likely a conflicht between the WU and another addon you have, which could be anything. It could even be one of the default aircraft that is used in that bushtrip that is causing the issue, either because its files have been damaged, it has been modified or is simply missing, but that's just a few of the possible causes.

While you have learnt that process, it maybe a good idea for you to look for duplicated Microsoft airports. So eg. if you have a third party airport, use the process to delete the same Microsoft airport that may be installed. This will avoid any conflicts you may experience.

Strange!  Why don't the vast majority of us have the same problem?  MSFS is a bit of a paradox sometimes.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

I can only assume it is the Scotland Bush Trip in combination with another 3rd Party Add-on.

I had the same issue. In the end, I had to delete every single add-on I had and the sim stopped crashing on startup, so obviously it was an incompatibility with an add-on. Which one? I have no idea. I had too many installed to narrow it down.

Ultimately, Microsoft Flight Simulator has by very far the most active add-on creator community the industry ever had. No sim ever had as many add-ons released in the same period of time and it isn't even close, which multiplies the chance for incompatibilities.

It worked!  I installed everything but the Bush Trip - Scotland option and MSFS started up with no problem!

Glad this worked for you too!

One way to test airports for which you have a duplicate is to create a starting point by clicking on the map just south of the airport maybe 5 miles away. And fly towards the airport in the sim. Stop short and jump into the drone and investigate, looking for oddities. I have a high end screen saver and image editor called Snagit and can easily hotkey capture high definition screenshots to compare with later when only one airport is in the game. The hotkey allows framing the part of the screen you want to capture.

(Avsim used to have archived threads and features which were searchable. A search for "screen capture" turned up Snagit which was being reviewed and recommended by our former fearless leader Tom Allensworth).

When I was troubleshooting this issue, I noticed that others weren't experiencing the same problem, as there were no reports on the official forums or elsewhere. In hindsight, I should have raised the issue sooner, as it turns out at least two other users in this thread have encountered the exact same problem.

It's worth mentioning that when I was troubleshooting this issue, my entire installation was a only a few weeks old as I had performed a full reinstall after replacing faulty RAM that was causing CTDs and occassional blue screens on my PC.

Conflict with an addon seemed the obvious cause, but I tested with my community folder emptied and in safe mode, which also disables marketplace addons. Despite this, the simulator still crashed to desktop at the exact same spot while loading. To this day I have no idea what is causing the issue, other than the Bush Trip - Scotland portion of the world update.

I'm not willing to spend more time troubleshooting, as MSFS loads fine now and I can certainly live without Scotland bush trips (and MSFS 2024 is just around the corner).

I'm not having any trouble with the Scotland The Brave bushtrip.
