It's a bit like trying to get a traffic signal in Texas. A certain number of people have to die before anything gets done. What were the Saudis thinking?

The whole scenario is a case of 'Why did they not...' followed by a huge list of alternative actions.

Thing is, we're 40+ years and several industry-changing incidents later. Judging that crew's actions entirely based on 2024's knowledge is unfair.

That being said, rostering a substandard flight crew together sadly contributed to their demise. Any number of different actions may have saved people on-board.

The idea that you'd install a fire /smoke detector in a cargo hold but no extinguisher based on the idea "yeh well it'll probably burn itself out anyway no worries" is for me the single most direct cause of this incident. I really hope that was just awful engineering and not bean counting.

The cargo hold is designed to contain a fire long enough to safely get on the ground and evacuated. THe fired detection system was to notify the crew of the fires presence so they can begin an immediate diversion to land. Many planes today do have fire extinguishers in the cargo hold, but not all of them.

I have been on vacation in some places where traffic lights are treated as "suggestions".

I`ve been on cruise ships without water-tight doors in Cat 5 waves in the China Sea watching the Keel submerging the under tidal waves slamming above the bowl and it was probably not her first Rodeo neither

Nowadays I'm not too fond of even a mild rollercoaster

What`s going on at Sea stays at Sea (Hopefully above water)

Understood but there's the first design error.

You can NOT contain a fire.

THIS^^^^^^^^^^

Between the two pilots and the FE, their total time on type together with their individual failures in training plus the horrible rostering decisions of management are without a doubt in my mind responsible for the fatal outcome.

Referring to a work colleague as a "jackass" is not the kind of cockpit environment conducive to quality teamwork.
