Graphics COMPARISON of MSFS 2024 vs MSFS 2020

Featured Replies

I'm very interested in the seasons and how they're depicted, the recent UK update whereby you have scorched brown fields right next to a line of purest green (Blackadder pun for you there!) fields makes it look absolutely hideous.

So will seasons "hide" that sort of poor visuals? That'll be one of the first things I'll be looking at.

  • Actually no... I was pretty much amazed by what I saw once it was installed on my PC. Looked kinda like the previews.

  • The more I see these comparisons the more impressive MSFS 2024's visuals are... starting off with the graphics of Sublogic FS on the Commodore 64 to now have the whole digital earth as our sandbox rep

  • Except in this case we are not just looking at produced videos by MS but also going by what all these various press and social media folks have actually seen with their eyes and used on test builds. A

Is it possible that the AI senses the season and where “grass” and roads and dirt are and does some high altitude, lower fidelity version of those to help color and and seasons to the view from high above?

That‘s one of my big question marks as well. I really hope so.

I fly airliners high up in the sky. Not interested how the Grand Canyon looks like from the ground. Not sure if 2024 will bring me any real upgrade, besides maybe some better clouds.

Ya for airliner simmers the 2024 some of the improvements of interest would be:

2024 has invented the purest green - one might even call it green gold 😉

Yet the scorched fields of the UK are a disaster for sure, commented on it at the time but very little was ever said about it, ruined flying parts of the UK for me.

I think this time if i do get 2024 i'll invest in an Xbox for it. I've been looking for an excuse to get one and this might be it.

I mentioned it also, and I also asked how this would work with seasons.

Example brown field (scan taken in summer) - but you are flying in January. Will the AI paint that field green?

Also crops, example - if you are flying in areas when it's summer but the scan was taken in winter, you may not have the correct crops/any crops showing - no crops = no AI rendering 3D crops.

I'm sure Asobo have taken all this into account and would love to know how they have done it from a technical pov.

They’ve also improved the weather (i.e. storm turbulance) and the flight physics. 2024 isn’t just scenery enhancement

At the ground level, the graphics of MSFS 2024 look 6 years more advanced than MSFS 2020, and look 15 years more advanced than the "main competition."

I fly my airliner low down, so I absolutely do care what the ground looks like!!

That would be nice to know indeed. What particularly worries me about the crops is the LOD ‘pop-in’ that was seen in some of the previews, they appear *very* late, only when you're super close to the field.

In this example it's just horrible

same thing happens with grass in 2020.

Indeed, this was hard to ignore once spotted, low TLOD = look to the side and down - not ahead.

I want to fly over areas like the south if France and see those wine vineyards stretching out Infront of me, not row by row, one field at a time.

What were those PC specs again at the big reveal, GPU was a 3080 wasn't it - hardly entry level - CPU?

I bet all those people that are negative about MS 2024 will be the first ones digitally moving too Kiribati and buy the new sim when it comes out😋

Specs are one thing, I've not seen one mention in the reviews about specific Graphics Settings used, which is another. I'm OK with LOD popping in during an Alpha Event pre-release, if they're popping in when I have LODs turned up on release day then that's when the pitchforks come out. They've had long enough to realise they messed it up with MSFS2020 when they kept changing the goalposts with LODs every other update, MSFS24 is the time to finally "get it right".
