13700k to 7800X3D for MSFS2020/2024

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have been digging on this subject for about a month. First time asking before I settle the purchase.

My current computer is 13700k, 32GB DDR4 with AMD 7900XT. Using 1440p ultrawide. I balance my settings with TAA and high/ultra/medium, LOD 100...etc...

For most of the time, it handles MSFS2020 beautifully and smoothly way above 40FPS on ground and in the air . Sitting at major hub like KSFO, KLAX, KJFK, KEWR, EGLL, EDDF, VHHH, WSSS,...(payware addons, no AI traffic) it struggles ~30FPS and below with PMDG/Fenix. For me it's unplayable, tried to lower to Medium settings with LOD 50 but only increase couple fps.

Using dev mode + show FPS of course limited by mainthread. Using rivatuner and crosscheck I can see the graphic card still have plenty of room for further settings.

Searching on the Internet with multiples (a lot) of reviews and topics, some says 7800X3D going to give much better FPS, some shows it only increase a few.
If moving to 7800X3D I'm going to invest ~200$ more. What is your opinion on this investment?
Rumors MSFS2024 will be more optimized for multicore, Intel going to release new CPUs (probably gonna cost quite a bit) and AMD also releasing new X3D CPUs (anything new from AMD I'm going to skip for about a year before buying).

Thanks and happy flights everyone!

Something must be wrong. I have 25-30fps 1440p with a I7-4770k4,3ghz 32gb DDR3 2400 and an old GTX EVGA FTW3 1080TI

Same situations with MaddogX,Fenix and all PMDG. No traffic or at max 10 planes in the visinity

Update , sorry My LOD is only 50-80

Thank you,

Even with LOD 50-80 my FPS pretty much the same, only go up couple fps. Hopefully I'm missing something!

Cheers.

I don't know that the upgrade will produce enough improvement over a 13700K to make it worth doing.  Of course that depends on what you consider might constitute "worth doing".

I just upgraded my MSFS box from a 10900K to a 7800X3D, and with a 4090 it can hold ~30 fps at a complex airport with TLOD and OLOD both dialed way up at 200, with ~70 AI (static) acft in place via PSXT.  With LSFG frame generation it reliably holds >60 fps in demanding scenarios, which is more than acceptable.  It was a significant improvement over my old CPU, but I think the 13700K is quite a bit closer to the 7800X3D in terms of capability.

Personally, if you're already running a 13700K, I'd wait and see how things shake out with Son of SImzilla.

To add to Bob's reply, be aware that moving to the 7800X3D will mean a new motherboard, new cooler and, possibly, new memory modules as well.

I'd sit tight for the time being and see how 2024 pans out in conjunction with the new hardware on the horizon.

Yeah, I agree.  I would hold out for a month or two.  The 9800x3d is rumored to release soon.

About 1.5 years ago I upgraded to the 7900xt and the 7800x3d. I'm happy with it. Monitor is a 49" MSI. 32 gigs ram planning to up it to 64.

I second (third?) the opinion to wait until after both MSFS2024 and 9800X3D are out.

For you to see meaningful improvement you would need to go 7800X3D *and* frame generation.   And new X3D is coming soontm

Have you tried Lossless Scaling ? That will easily double your framerate. Buy it on steam for just 7$. Best money I have ever spend ! There are a number of posts in the MSFS forum.
