PMDG's secret project? The 747-100!

For one it’s a 3 person cockpit with an insanely high workload for a single MSFS pilot and the demands of flying raw data is beyond the scope of most desktop pilots.

Sounds very interesting! The more complex and realistic and the more simulated cockpit systems to micromanage, the better! 🙂

What is "flying raw data"? No FMC computer with waypoints or what is meant by raw-data in aviation language?

Personally, I do think there's a market for it. How many A320s and 737s do we need? Time to get into them classic liners and dig deeper into the learning curve. For me, the RFP 747 was a great experie

  • I am looking forward to this. I loved the RFP 747-200 back in the day. I am hoping it comes with an option for no GPS - just the CIVA 10-waypoint INS!

Yes, using only NDB and VOR (and/or INS)

For transparency: I'm a community mentor at the BATC discord. However, I do not get paid for it in any way.

Hm that should be no problem. 🙂 There are already some jets using VOR navigation like the Just Flight Fokker F28. A bigger problem is no ILS-autoland and no autothrottle when simulated airplanes are getting too old (almost vintage and not retro-eighties-style) and therefore too manual-handflying-only style.

But I still would buy that 747 even if landing it was impossible without ILS-autoland because a 747 belongs in every virtual hangar. Absolute all-time classic and most iconic aircraft that was ever designed.

In my part of the world at least flying raw data refers to flying without a flight director.

The flight directors work out what pitch or heading to fly and it’s easy to blindly follow them. When flying raw data it’s up to you to find the correct pitch or wind correction to make the aircraft do what you want it to do, your instrument scan needs to be much quicker than when using the flight director.

One of the simulator routines we fly every so often in the 787 sim is a raw data ILS using the HUD, which is relatively easy once you learn the technique of using the flight path vector symbol.

It can be nicely replicated using the WT 787 in MSFS preferably with VR

I was hoping for a modern business jet.

In our dreams.  Though I'd love to see them do their Falcon 50 for us...

I was hoping for a 757!

But 747-100 is kind of cool. To sit at the gate and click buttons, listen to the sounds and admire it.

By raw data I meant doing a departure or arrival using radials and fixes on analogue instruments and a chart rather than a magenta line, all while using manual thrust in a very large jet. I have a PPL and a zillion hours in the desktop sim and I’d find it very hard. I can’t see many folks willing to put in the graft to learn this one.

A 75 or 76, or a 737 300-500 would be a lot more palatable for the MSFS crowd.

If it'll be on the level of Ready for pushback, it'll be mine!🙃

(It even had a virtual cockpit!!!)

I still have printed and binded huge manual.

Simply put: flying without Flight Director aid (whose purpose is to anticipate steering towards an intended path. Based on the principle rate of change of deviation)

At least the instrument training syllabus (EASA) is quite clear on the subject and makes a distinction between

  • computed information (such as a flight director)

and

  • raw data, where you as the pilot will have to interpret the incoming data and anticipate any corrective measures.

I try and do a lot of this in the desktop sim in different aircraft, it’s quite a mental work out and helps stave off cognitive decline.

This would be quite a lot of fun as a three person shared cockpit using Your Controls.

Flightsimming since 1992

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

Having flown the catty 742 in XP for years I'd say it's quite automated and manageable with one simmer, as long as there is no random failures

If you fly under 4 hour then the FE panel is set and forget, after starting taxi, you only need to set landing altitude for pressurization and open the res fuel tank valve at T/D, maybe check the fuel heater if you got really cold.

The auto flight is very advanced, you can hold air speed at climb/descend with pitch or even in cruise with auto throttle! it can even automatically capture the pre-set altitude if you remember to arm it! The CIVA would need more nursing at cruise but nothing else to worry about at that phase of flight anyway, and if using the premium LTN92 and a simple lua script to manage fuel, I can have a good night sleep and land it later across the pacific.

If it's done right, this might be something for me.

cheers,
NiIs U.
